Hi, I have been trying to find out Oscar Carl's parents' names for years! He was born Oscar Carl Olson, which could also be spelled Olsen, Olsson, Oleson...

How did you determine his actual birthdate? I also know that he & Addie May Hope were married in 1909, but have been unable to ascertain the exact date or location.

All I know is that Oscar & Addie were married as Olson, and at some point after the 1910 US Census they moved & changed their name to Edglie; but I'm not sure which occured first, the move or the name change.

I have a copy of Oscar Carl Edglies Death Cert. from BC Archives.
It states his birthday as 2 Dec. 1880. Born in Wisconsin, in Canada 30 years. His death was 9 March 1942 so take away 30 and there should be an immigration document somewhere (easy for me to say). The person that wss the informant was Mrs. S E Haroldson, from Seattle, Wash. (daughter). You can go to BC Archives, Vital Event, Deaths and type in his name. That is also where I found Addie May Edglies death cert. On her cert if states she was in the province 8 years. So that gives us Sept 1920 - 8 years = 1912 for her immigration. I will check some records too and we can try to solve this mystery. I still have shopping to do, so must run, talk to you later. Gloria

For some reason, I never saw your reply. One of my other relatives researching another line in our mutual family came across this & pasted it to an email he sent me. I'm so sorry that I didn't reply & thank you for the info.

I'm Oscar & Addie's great granddaughter, as their daughter Charity was my maternal grandmother. My grandma was very vague about Oscar's info, as she felt family "secrets" were to be kept just that. So details were never really discussed.

Back before the internet, I sent requests for immigration records to Canada for Oscar and got nowhere. I will try the agency you've listed.

It's been so long since I was on this site that I forgot my password! Too many numbers now a days. I also haven't been able to track down much about Oscar. Like I said before, I do have a copy of his death cert. so I will try and get a copy to send to your yahoo account. My printer is a pain, it shrinks everything and then hides it in my pictures program (certainly couldn't be my fault)but I will do my best. Lil, my girlfriend that I am doing this for, also has a very vague background. Her parents didn't tell the family anything, her mother was blind and had 10 children, father went blind after being in the war and having schrapnel pieces all over himself. He took Lil out of school in grade 6 and she became his seeing eye daughter, spent most of her time trying to survive.
She had no idea who her grandparents were when we started so it is kind of rewarding to help her out. Evelyn Francis Edglie (Charity's sister) was Lil's mother, she passed away May 6, 1985. Talk to you soon, gloria

I came across this post when googling Oscar Carl Edglie, he's the father of a DNA match of mine, and I'm doing a reverse family tree search where I don't know the name of my grandfather.
Anyway, I have a census record for Oscar where he states he was in Illinois in 1909, but then his daughter Hope was born in Canada in 1914.
I have his parents names as John Olson and Myra Rena Mogle.
Could either of you please advise of his children Floyd, Evelyn, Peggy and Fay, who was born to Addie and who was born to Eva? The other children I have the correct mother assigned.

Hello Tonia, Floyd,Peggy and Fay were my Grandmother siblings, my grandmother was Evelyn whom was married to Warren Scott. They had 10 children together, Billy (Billy has passed) Larry,David, Roger, Ina (Ina has passed) Linda, Rosemary,Wendy,Louise,Lillian.
I was Born to Lillian but unwanted and went into the foster system at a young age and then again as a teenagerand given up to the courts permanently at the age if 14 years old.

I've been researching Oscar for a couple years, and here's what I have found. Please reach out for more info/sources.

Karl Oskar Olsen (later Oscar Carl Edglie) was born on December 2, 1878, in Sumner, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin to John Olsen Eidsli(e), born 1840, and Lina Kaspersen, born in 1847. His parents were both born in Norway. Oscar was baptised on the 19th of January, 1879, at the South Beef River Lutheran Church.

A John Olsen is listed as head of one of the 15 charter member families of the South Beef River Church, and Oscar’s brother Albert Joachim was the third child ever baptised at this church, so I believe that Oscar’s family is the John Olsen family listed. Oscar had 9 other siblings as well.

By the 15th of June, 1880, the Olsen family was living in Drayton, Pembina County, North Dakota, which is just across the Red River that forms the border with Minnesota. His father John Olsen Eidsli died on the 29th of Sep, 1892, in Grafton, Walsh County, North Dakota, and was buried in the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery.

On the 19th of June, 1900, Oscar was listed as the head of the family household when the census was taken. They lived in Fork township, Marshall, Minnesota. Oscar was listed as a farmer, and the farm was owned by the family. Oscar and the Olsen family could read, write, and speak English, except his mother Lena, who couldn’t read or write. On the 22nd of June, in the 1905 census of Minnesota, Oscar was still listed as the head of this household in Fork.

Oscar married Addie May Hope in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois on March 30, 1909, when he was 30 years old. Addie was 21 and living in Ridott, IL at the time, and Oscar was living in Fork, MN. Addie’s father John Francis Hope was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1851, and his parents were both born in Ireland. Addie’s mother Almira “Myra” Elizabeth Ballou was born in LaPorte, Indiana in 1860. Her father was born in Indiana, and her mother was born in Ohio.

By the 23rd of April, 1910, Oscar was living in a rented house in Duluth, Minnesota, on the border of Wisconsin and right on Lake Superior. On the census, he said that he was the president of a lumber company. He lived with his wife, his mother-in-law Myra, his brother-in-law Lee W, and Alice Eideberg, their Norwegian servant.

Around 1911, Oscar and Eva immigrated to Vancouver, BC. After this time, all records show him named Oscar Carl Edglie. There they had at least three children together; Faith Marie in 1913, Hope Victoria in 1915, and Charity Adeline in 1917. His wife Addie died on the 4th of September, 1920.

From 1914 to 1916, Oscar was a machinist for the Empire Manufacturing Company at 6th and Alder. In 1917, Oscar was a mechanic for H J Tucker, dealer of Federal Trucks and Abbott-Detroit cars, who had a service station at 833 West Pender. From 1918 until at least 1921, Oscar was a driller then a boilermaker at Vancouver Engineering Works Ltd at 599 W 6th Ave. In 1922 he was also listed as a boilermaker in the Hendersons City Directory, but it doesn’t say where. From 1925 to 1927, Oscar was listed as a millwright in the Wrigley Henderson and then the Wrigleys City Directories. In 1928, Oscar was back to being a machinist. From 1930 to 1933, Oscar was listed as being a carpenter.

From 1912 to 1920, Oscar and family lived at 3232 William St. On the 4th of September, 1920, Addie May Edglie died of pulmonary tuberculosis, which she had for 3 years. She was almost 33 years old. She was buried at the Mountain View Cemetery on September 7th.

From 1921 to 1935, Oscar and his children lived at 3230 Venables St. In June of 1921, Oscar had a 29 year old housekeeper from England named Eva Searle living with him and his kids. Eva emigrated to Canada in 1919 or 1920. Eva, Oscar, and all of his kids were listed as Bible Students under their religion on the 1921 census. Oscar married Eva May Searle later that year in Seattle, Washington, on November 10, 1921. They went on to have at least five children together; Floyd Albert in 1923, Evelyn Frances in 1925, Olive in 1926, Beulah Mellesande in 1928, Margaret “Peggy” Joan in 1930, and Lovey in 1932. This house must have also had a farm, because from 1923 to 1927, there were ads in the Vancouver Sun and the Vancouver Daily Province selling hens, pullets, a cow, and a goat at this address.

Oscar and Eva May were naturalized on May 29, 1928, after they took their oath of allegiance.

On May 12th, 1930, Oscar and Eva were in a car accident on Barnet Road in Burnaby, BC, west of Barnet Mills. They crashed into a telephone pole guy wire and were both hospitalized, but Eva got the worst of it, with a broken leg as well as cuts and bruises.

In May of 1931, Oscar and his bulldog Rogue won best Canadian-bred bulldog under 45lbs in the Vancouver Kennel Club Dog Show.

On September 8th, 1932, at 4:40am, Oscar’s four year old daughter Beulah Mellesande died of meningitis, which she had for four days. She was buried on September 10th at Ocean View Burial Park.

On March 22nd, 1933, at around 1pm, Oscar was shopping at Woodward's Department Store in Vancouver. As he was coming down a staircase, he slipped on a piece of orange peel and fell down the remaining stairs, fracturing his left arm. The next year, the BC Supreme Court found Woodward's to be negligent, and awarded Oscar $3099 in damages. For more on this, see Edglie Vs Woodward Stores Limited (1934)

From 1935 to at least 1937, Oscar and family lived on a farm on Mitchell Island in Richmond, BC.

Oscar's wife Eva May Edglie died on the 24th of April, 1937. She was almost 51 years old. Eva died of labor pneumonia due to asthenia and cachexia due to carcinoma of ear. She was buried at Ocean View Burial Park on April 28th.

In 1939, Oscar was living at 407 Robson St. At 7:25 am on August 7th, 1939, Oscar was running The Bulldog Fish and Chip Shop at 674 or 676 Smithe St, on the corner of Smithe and Granville, when a fire started. He struggled with all the smoke and flames, but eventually escaped through a side door into an alley.

In early 1940, Oscar was living at 116 West Georgia St. On January 4th, 1940, Oscar was beaten up by two Chinese men at Main and Union St around 8:30. According to him, he saw a white woman that he recognized walking with the two men, and after Oscar spoke to her, the men attacked him.

In November of 1940 Oscar lived at 700 Cambie St. On November 7th he was hit by a car driven by Alan Inglis Deacon while crossing Cambie at Georgia St. In that accident his right leg was fractured. On the 14th of October, 1941, the Supreme Court of BC awarded Oscar $4300 in his case against the driver.

Five months later, on March 9, 1942 Oscar Carl Edglie died in Vancouver at the age of 61. He was living at 750 Hamilton St when he died. The death certificate says that “this man was found dead on a couch in the kitchen at his home.” The cause of death was acute cardiac dilatation due to coronary sclerosis and occlusion due to myocardial ejection. His daughter Hope Haroldson of Seattle was the informant, and she said that he has been a rooming house proprietor for ten years, but I have yet to find any record of this. He was buried at the Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, with either no monument or stone, or one that has been lost to time.

Correction: Lovey was a nickname of Charity Adeline, not a seperate person
