Looking for Richard William Phillips

Query by cdanes

Richard William Phillips married Jane Gumbleton in 1871 in Wagga Wagga NSW. On his marriage certificate he said he was 30 and born in Sydney. His parents are Samuel Phillips and Maria Brennan.

Jane is the daughter of Henry Gumbleton and Jane Oxford who worked on Macarthur's farm at Camden and she was born in 1853.

Richard worked in the Railway and was stationed in Junee, Harden, Cootamundra and Murrumburrah. Their last child Arthur was born in Cootamundra.

We are unable to find a record of Richards birth and both Richard and Jane's death. Jane died before son Henry's marriage in 1904 and Richard died sometime between then and 1914.

Just a thought, it may be possible to find a birth record of your Richard PHILLIPS by contacting the NSW Railways to see if his DOB is in their historical records. I'm sure I included a link for NSW railways, just search for 'railway' or 'NSW' in the top right-hand corner here at FamilyTreeCircles.

Make sure you also register as a new user of RootsChat then goto their EMIGRANTS TO AUSTRALIA board. RootsChatters should be able to give you lots of tips. And it's good to spread some of your searches around as you will get lots of data/ideas.

There is a death record for Richard Phillips on NSW BDM. Reg No 13674/1911, died at Bega NSW in 1911, parents Samuel and Maria. Maybe this could help.

I have recently found the death of Jane Phillips nee Gumbleton in Beechworth Victoria in 1930. She had been living in Victoria for 27 years so she evidently left Richard in about 1893. I am now trying to find out what she was doing for all those years.

I got Richard's date of birth from the Railway website and this doesn't match the age he had on his marriage cetificate or the ages on the birth certificates of his children which vary greatly as well.

I have the death certificate of Richard in Bega and I think this may be our Richarad, the only problem is that he was married Phoebe Sims and Elizabeth Luck. The children of Elizabeth Luck are some of the same names as Richard and Jane so I think the matron who filled out the certificate may have Elizabeth wrong.

This Phoebe Sims is the sister of Mary Sims who married Samuel Phillips who also is the son of Samuel Phillips and Maria Brennan and this Richard was their best man.

A problem we have is that the death certificates of Samuel Phillips and Maria Brennan / Brend they don't list Richard as a child.
