Let me get this right,
The crew on the HMS New Zealand in 1913 was Royal Navy. It arrived in Wellington on the 12 April 1913 and stayed about 4 weeks.
So if he was in the Royal Navy there would be records. Have you found any?
I know when the boys joined up for the first world war in NZ they were not asked for identification so that was the easy part for him.
I have a photo of the crew taken in NZ in 1913 but of course you can't tell who's who.
The Torpedo Bay Navy Museum in NZ exhibits a collection and history of the 'HMS New Zealand' but I don't know if they would have crew records there. They would probably be in Britain. You could email them and ask.
