Looking for Te Hiiri Rangi/Kamana ancestor

Query by kimihia

Settled in Marokopa / Maniapoto area but we cannot find any information regarding where they came from. I can only remember my mother mentioning that her family came from Taranaki South / Rangitikei region late 1800 - early 1900. Te Hiiri Rangimarie Kamana? half brother is Te Rawhiti. I suspect that Kamana is not their original surname as we have found information online that links Te Hiiri, Hiiri, Kamana, Rangi to my ancestor. I wonder if the Kamana name is in fact an incorrect spelling made by early Europeans of name being Whakamana / Kaumoana or something similar.

I traced Te Hiiri and Te Rawhiti to landless people in Tuakau at end of maori wars however cannot find any further information. I suspect they were only in the Tuakau area as war sympathisers but have no data to support this. Any help you can supply would be appreciated. Thank you
