Looking for the birth details of Alexander Halligan and Elizabeth McCarthy of Wanganui, New Zealand

Query by PChilds01

If anyone has information about the birth details of Alexander Halligan (born about 1837)and his wife Elizabeth McCarthy (born about 1847) I would be delighted to hear from them. Their death certificates give their place of birth as Ireland and New Zealand respectively. Alexander's father was Thomas who may have come from Fermanagh. Family sources say that Alexander was born in Armagh, however the IGI index gives his birthplace as Swineford, Mayo. According to her death record, Elizabeth was born in New Zealand, however NZ BDM and Diocesan archives have not found a birth entry for Elizabeth and I suspect she immigrated to New Zealand. Please can any of their descendants confirm?

Hi there. No I'm specifically looking for Elizabeth (b. 1847-8) but have come across a lot of McCarthys in my research. I think my Elizabeth might be from the McCarthy family of Boherbue in County Cork, Ireland but haven't found any evidence yet, however she could have been a relative of Thomas George McCarthy who was a brewer in Charleston on the West Coast and who seems to have changed the spelling his name from McCarthy to Macarthy. He was a prominent brewer in Wellington until he died about 1919 and the Macarthy Trust was set up after he died. He was supposed to have been born in London, but I haven't found a birth record for him. I also think that Jeremiah, a publican, who bought the Union Hotel in Notown about 1878 might have been connected to Elizabeth. Do any of these names ring a bell with you? A lot of Irish immigrants came via the Victorian goldfields to New Zealand. Sorting them out is the problem! Regards, Pam
