Thanks, but unfortunately I don't think this is the right person. Thomas joined the British Army in 1859 and gave his year of birth as 1840.
I checked the England BMD index and the only Thomas Hynes I could find was the one below which matches the baptism above. I searched 1838 +/- 5years

Excellent, I'll certainly follow up your suggestion - many thanks for your help
Hi, I am the granddaughter of Sydney Hynes son of Thomas and Caroline Hynes. Sydney moved to New Zealand and married there. My mother was his daughter. I haven't got much beyond Thomas who was born in Liverpool in 1837 married Caroline Davis, born in Nova Scotia died and buried in Devonport Tasmania.
Interesting thread!
If Caroline's parents were John Davis and Caroline Burke, then she had a brother Benjamin Edward who moved to Sydney, Australia, and a sister Elizabeth Ann, who's daughter Clara moved to Melbourne, Australia. Elizabeth was married at Buttevant, Cork and Ben gave Cork as his birth place on his marriage certificate in Australia. I am his great grandson.
