MAIN, James Patrick of Edinburgh 1800's
We are searching for birth details of one James Patrick MAIN of Edinburgh born c1802 according to death cert details and other personal papers.
James Patrick's father was one Peter MAIN of Edinburgh. Peter to two wives had two sons, James Patrick and James McNab MAIN. Both the boys were convicted and transported to Tasmania, James Patrick in 1817 on the 'Hibernia', and James McNab on the 'Bengal Merchant' in 1836. Both became successful and Patrick (his chosen and preferred name) was a pioneer of Victoria and is mentioned in many histories, records etc. He also was an applicant for the Terra Incognita Expedition from Victoria to The Gulf. Ultimately the job of leader went to Burke and he chose Wills as his assistant. Neither had any skills whatsoever with men, animals, bushcraft, boatbuilding, army training and so the Expedition failed (a classic story of Australia's history) James Patrick MAIN had every skill required and his application is glowing of his ability to carry out the task of leading 17 men to cross Australia. Only one member survived.
We have every record and detail of their lives in Australia but it is the proof of birth that eludes us.
If anyone can assist we would be eternally grateful.

There really is only one way to find the details, Scotland's People site that SilverVixen suggested in your previous post.
http://scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
there is a tree on ancestry that suggests his father was Patrick Peter Main again the Scotland People site will confirm this.
Thank you. I shall check it out.
ASH.,
We already have proof of his father being Patrick (Peter) Main and also proof of his father's suicide and all the details of the boy's transportation and lives in Australia. It is just the proof of his birth that eludes us. I shall join SP and see if I can get an answer. Thanks for the info.
