Mary Scully, James Shanahan/Shannon, Moses Scully, Margaret McNamara
I have been researching James Shanahan/Shannon married to Mary Scully. Both were from Ireland, married and lived in Nelson, Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada. I cannot get beyond these two people, where they came from in Ireland. I was told Moses Scully and Maragaret McNamara Scully were the parents of Mary Scully Shanahan. I was also told that James changed his name to Shanahan from Shannon. I have plenty of information on this family while in New Brunswick which I am willing to share. I need to place them in Ireland. I have no idea what ship they came on, James and Mary married August 21, 1843 in New Brunswick. On the 1852 canada census they came to Canada at different times. He says 1838 and she says 1830.
The story goes that they eloped from Ireland because her father felt he was below her station, that was why he changed his name. How can this be true if they arrived 8 years apart?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe we are looking for information about the same James and Mary Shannon except the name change was from Shanahan to Shannon. My mother and her siblings were told the couple eloped because James was not of the same station as Mary. My mother said there were cousins on Prince Edward Island who had more information but she was not interested in the family history so did not gather any details and cannot remember the cousins' names.
Hello,
I have not heard of any cousins in PEI.
What line are you tracing? Michael Shannon is my great grandfather, he was the eldest son of James and Mary.
I'm happy to help if you need anything from that line.
I have not been able to get any information on the two daughters of James and Mary, Bridget and Catherine. I do have some information on James 2 and William.
If you have anything to share I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Sue
Michael Shannon is my mother's grandfather. I was able to copy his death certificate and the marriage certificate for his son, Roy. My mother said Michael was cared for by Annie Weymouth and her son, Bob knows more about the family history. I am not sure if he is still living. The Fogler Library at UMO has census records for Maine and Canada going back to Colonial times. They also have copies of vital records. I was unable to do further research before I moved south.
So we are related, but in what way? The Bob you referred to is my dad who passed several years ago at the age of 93 years.
Can we exchange email addresses to discuss this in more detail? You can e-mail me at sue2566@aol.com. I live in Maine now, returning in 2000 to live here. Before that my husband I lived in Michigan and raised our family there.
Hoping to hear from you,
Sue
