McLean's from NE Scotland

Journal by Ronynz

There are a couple of McLeans that are eluding me in my search. My furthest back is my 4G grandfather Donald McLean, born in Rosemarkie around 1808. He may have had a brother called Duncan. He was a soldier who died in Ireland in 1846.
The next sticking point is My 2G grandfather James Shand McLean (b1851). The family story is that he migrated to the USA in the 1890's with the intent of finding work & them getting his family to follow - but he appears to have disappeared at this point.
More recently is my G Grandfather John Shand McLean (b1887). He and my G Grandmother didn't marry and we have no idea if there is another family to find. He too supposedly went to the USA around 1910.
Any ideas gratefully recieved!!

Dear Rony, Hi there. Wishing you a warm welcome to FamilyTreeCircles.

Always nice to have someone from NZ here.

Lovely place by the way... Rosemarkie feature page at Undiscovered Scotland

GENEALOGY SUGGESTIONS:-

Join up as a free member of RootsChat.com - FREE Genealogy Research. Tip: have the same username 'Ronynz' as on here in case someone is trying to find you. I'm on there as 'allycat' too.

Then goto their Ross & Cromarty board and post an '1841 Census Lookup Request MCLEAN family from Rosemarkie' and see what rootschatters can turn up for you.

With the MCLEANs that supposedly ended up in the USofA, perhaps a genealogist with access to ancestry.com may be able to do a lookup for you.

Also check out Rootschat - Emigrants to the United States.

Make sure you also try the usual websites for your MCLEANs like: tribalpages, geneanet, genebase, genesreunited, gencircles, rootsweb, linkpendium, the scotland genforums, etc. All these links will be within the surname wikis located on the homepage of familytreecircles. Just click on any surname. (I haven't done one for MCLEAN yet).

Kind regards,
