Mhari Gourlay - Family Connections

Journal by edwinlambert

I am starting to research my aunt's family. She was born Mhari Page Gourlay 4 Nov 1921 (?1918), her parents being Francis Page Gourlay, born 1879, and Hester Irene Sandbach, born 1885. Her parents were married 24 Nov 1920, in St Peter's Church, Cranley Gardens, london. Her granfather was James White Gourlay. Mhari married my uncle Captain George S Brodrick MBE, 1916 to 2006,in the Guards Chapel, during WW2.
I would be grateful of ant further information of family in this area. My aunt is also keen to learn more of her family. After about twelve years researching, this is the next piece of the family to research.

Dear Mr. Lambert, please accept mine and my fathers sincerest condolences for the recent loss of your aunt Mhari in April 2017. I am the son of Italian domestics who worked for your aunt and uncle at Eastwell Park Manor from 1950. My father who was butler and my mother as cook also recently deceased still has fond memories of both the Captain his wife their son and daughters. I myself still remember in particular the christmas tree in the hall and the odour of pine tree and candles when lit. The lake, the gardens, the farms, the woods and not forgetting when the shooting season was on I would be as a "beater" taking part on the Saturday for 10 shillings and a hot cup of tea at the end of the day with all theose who took part. I will gladly provide you with further information if you wish. You can contact me at george48ATlibero.it. With best regards, Giorgio Brufatto

It is very nice of you to respond, also for your condolences at the loss of my aunt Mhari, aged 95. We must have met at Eastwell Park, all those years ago. I was born in 1956 and my parents and I were regular visitors to Eastwell when I was a child. My mother was The Captain's younger sister, Guinevere. Of the Captain's family, Karen is well and married with three children and some grandchildren. Mazene, I regret, died some years ago and Julian is in a care home and is very unwell. I will be in contact, in due course. It is really nice to hear from you.

Giorgio, Karen has been in email contact with me. She remembers you all very well from Eastwell. She also remembers Nellie, who undertook the cleaning of the house. Nellie was either your father's or your mother's sister. We are sorry to hear about your mother, please accept our condolences.
Eastwell is much changed, do look at the website - the manor is now an very upmarket, and very expensive, hotel!

Hello Edwin, good to hear from you. Nellie my aunt is atill alive living in Melbourne where she emigrated to after the spell at Eastwell Park. She's my mothers sister. I was always told that Karen's sister to be Maxine but you tell me its Masine instead. Sadly I have to say my father Fiore also passed away last month on August 1st., he would have been 96 in December. Mind you he could still put up a discussion and keep on the ball. Everytime I come to UK I take my wife there for a lunch in Eastwell Manor and show her around. After lunch we drive down to the lake and show her the boat house. What memories!
