Cemetery records are available for the first time on the Napier City Council website. Records for Wharerangi Cemetery, which accounts for a third of burials in Napier, went on line at the start of the year, and those for other cemeteries will be progressively added to the site.
The Wharerangi Cemetery database can be searched in multiple ways depending on the available information - that might be the family name, given names, also known as, death date, interment date, inscriptions, last known address or last known occupation.
Each record displays all the information held by the Napier City Council. Where there is a plaque, inscriptions and any photo are included. Data has also been sourced from funeral directors and monumentalists. No council records exist for the years 1857-1895 as this information was destroyed in the 1931 earthquake.
Each record shows the exact location of the plot, with capability for zooming in and out of an interactive map. The location map also gives the searcher the ability to print a map offering three views - one showing the cemetery, another pinpointing the plot location and a third providing directions to the cemetery.
Simplifying public access to records for the city's six cemeteries is a wide-ranging project. The five-year exercise will draw together all the information lodged with or available to the Council - some 37,000 individual records. This information will be available as a permanent record on the website, providing a valuable database and a resource for genealogical research
This is a great asset for genealogy researches and the database can be searched here Napier Cemetery Database
