Bush Advocate, 19 March 1904 DEATH OF MR C. NORTHCOTE
It is with deep regret that we to-day have to record the death of Mr Cecil Northcote, our late well-known and much respected townsman, whose demise took place at his residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The deceased gentleman, who had arrived at about the age of 48 years, was taken ill some three weeks ago, and has practically remained in an unconscious state ever since. During the past dew days however, it was generally supposed that he was steadily improving, and the news of his death to-day came as a great surprise to his friends. Prior to his arrival in Dannevirke, Mr Northcote was connected with the well-known firm of Sargood, Son and Ewen, both as a traveler in Dunedin, and afterwards as the manager of their Invercargill branch. Leaving their service some years ago, he entered into business on his own account at Ashburton, and from there he came to this town, where he purchased the interest of Mr J. S. Watchorn, and afterwards that of Mr Power, in the house of which he has been the sole proprietor for the past eight months. Mr Northcote was generally recognised as a man of energetic and progressive business methods, and the embodiment of good nature, and his death will be widely regretted. Much sympathy will be felt for Mrs Northcote and her family in their sad bereavement. The late Mr Cecil Northcote was a kinsman (nephew) of Sir Henry Stafford Northcote, first Lord of Iddesleigh, who died in 1887
Ashburton Guardian, 21 March 1904 MR CECIL NORTHCOTE
The friends of Mr Cecil Northcote will regret to learn of his death, which occurred somewhat suddenly at Dannevirke, North Island, on Saturday. Recent letters received by his friends in Ashburton gave no intelligence even of Mr Northcote being indisposed, and up to the present his late partner, Mr Hefford, has received no particulars of his illness, so that the cause of death is not known. The deceased gentleman was in partnership with Mr George Hefford for about four years, but some fifteen months ago the partnership was dissolved. Mr Northcote bought a business at Dannevirke. He was of a genial and obliging disposition, and both in Ashburton and Invercargill was closely identified with football and athletic movements. While resident in Ashburton he made many friends. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn their loss. The remains will be conveyed to Ashburton by tomorrow's express, and the funeral will leave the station immediately afterwards for the Ashburton cemetery, where the interment will take place
CECIL was buried Plot 32, Area 94 at Ashburton cemetery on 22 March 1904 next to son Cyril Freeman Northcote. MARY ANN moved to Wellington and resided at 57 Marjoribanks street, Mt Victoria. She let the house (large 9 rooms including an upright grand piano) in 1911. She died 25 years after Cecil, 14 Aug 1929, in Wellington
