New Hobby or Passion

Journal by Newhobby78

I am 35 years old. I never really put to much thought in finding my heritage, until I sat and talked to my mawmaw. Things changed. I feel compelled to tell her story rather than mine, in hopes of getting answers to the questions she has carried for over 40 years. I am not trying to bore anyone but this story brought tears to my eyes. My grandmother (maw-maw)just turned 81 years young she is about 4 foot 8 and 100 pounds soaking wet. She sat me down about 4 months ago and ask me to make her a family tree. I never knew it was so addicting. She was born in 1933 in a small place called Tarrytown Georgia. She is the oldest of six children and the only one living. So getting information is not easy. She teary eyed and began the story that broke my heart. She was the daughter of Clyde Davis and Reba Haggard. She remembers being around the age of 3 when Clyde's father Robert "Bob" Davis and Viola Price took her from her parents. She remembers being very sick and Mr. Robert taking her to the doctor. This is when tears began to flow. The doctor told Robert "this baby wont make it through the night." She said as they were leaving a older black female stopped Robert and told him "you get that baby home take burnt hoecake and mashed them in her mouth, make sure it gets down in her throat." My maw-maw says to me don't cy baby I am here, I made it. She continued with how when she was growing up she made it to the 11th grade. She loved her mother and father no doubt, she just didn't understand why? She never met her mother Reba parents John and Sallie Haggard. I have found all of Sallie Fletcher's side. However I have contacted the LDS and they cant figure where John Mitchell Haggard came from. I cant find Robert's parents or Viola Price. I have found census records and death records for everyone but John. I am coming to the conclusion Viola's name has to be something else.Once I started doing the best research I know how I began reading census records. That's when the reality of a hard life hit me. Seeing that most kids who are 5 would be in school now days, that was not the case then farm laborer. There is so much more I would love to share. I am blessed beyond measure when it comes to my grandparents. Thanks so much for letting me share my story.

Sallie is his wife. On her death certificate his name appears on it as J M Haggard. I spoke with the a very nice lady in Montgomery County Georgia Probate office and I explained to her that on the death certificate it just says she is buried in Tarrytown. She named two of her children that are buried in Tarrytown. We both have come to the conclusion she has to be in an unmarked grave. She passed in 1938 so that would explain why my grandmother never remembered meeting her. My grandmother was born in 1933. The lady searched all of her records and cant find a death record for John M. Haggard. My grandmother says John passed when she was young. In searching the census records for the year 1940 I cant find him. Thank you for helping me.

dates of birth seem to vary here but it looks like the correct family. I would suggest John and Sallie married around 1900/ 04

I was recently working on my Grandfather's tree on my Momma's side. He did not raise her and my Grandmother married someone else. His name was Price. I am sure I saw that name Viola in my search. I will look through my records and see if I can find it. A word of caution- there are several reasons to be confused. One is the fact that the census takers are advised to write down exactly what they are told. The fact that our ancestors had poor grammar and many could potentially not read or write is responsible for many mistakes I have found. The second problem is similarities with other's names and places. I had a guy who "TOLD" me in a long email a bunch of "facts" that were hogwash. I do not have a grandchild, let alone six GREAT grandkids! Much misinformation comes from Ancestry .com. Yes, that is where he got this trash. Seeing as how I have been to the graves and had a lot of information directly from the people in question, I knew it was wrong, (not to mention I think I know how many grandkids I have!). So please, try to confirm these things through a neutral source. Genealogists don't like it when you tell them they are wrong! :) Good luck! Bless that little Grandma!

Yes I agree I have a tree on ancestry myself. I am so very new at this stuff. When I first started, I got so excited when I would get all those hints. Well I thought I had the right information and I kid you not I went all the 1700's before realizing that everyone that had one of my grandmothers death in 1908. That's when it hit me and I had to delete my whole tree just about. Mainly because they had her death in 1908 yet she had a child in 1913. The same grandmother they had passing away in 1908 in Georgia actually passed away in Florida in 1950. Lucky me I have family Sumter County Florida to verify. I also called the funeral home to get information. I have called the probate office in Montgomery County Georgia and bless that ladies heart she cant find John Mitchell Haggard GGGrandfather. You are very correct on everything you said. I have made a couple amendments to the census records concerning my grandmothers name Johnnie Clyde Davis. On the census it read John Clyde male son. Thank you again. I also had her do a dna test. However I haven't been able to get anywhere with that.
