Have you been on britishnewspapersarchive.co.uk? Just found references to my ancestor Abraham being convicted of stealing growing vegetables in Bristol, and other such skeletons in the cupboard(s)!. I have yet to pay for anything in full, but will no doubt be doing so quite soon. It looks like a great resource, not only for genealogists, but also for anyone interested in history.

Indeed I have jimgranter, Britain plans to digitise 40 million pages over the next decade.
This will be a major resource for academics and researchers. The vast majority of the British Library's 750 million pages of newspapers which is the largest collection in the world was only available on microfilm or bound in bulky volumes at a newspaper archive in north London, where the yellowing journals cover 20 miles (32 kilometers) of shelves.
I can spend hours reading old newspaper stories and thinking WOW! this really happened - and BOY! nothing's changed
I love the old advertisements and yes I've also found a few skeletons.
The Hatched, Matched and dispatched and excellent way of finding relatives.
Then there's the Inquests, Divorces and family embarrassments.
