PANKHURST AND PURDY SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Hi . I am still trying to find out information about my GG grandfather Joseph Pankhurst. I have no idea when he arrived in Australia except that he arrived before 1842 as he married in Adelaide that year but his wife died in 1845. In 1847 he married my GG grandmother mary Purdy. I am not sure how many children their were but know of at least 6 incuding my GG Grandfather Walter who married Selina Bond in Kadina SA . I have not been able to find birth records for any of them except Dorcas who was born in SA in 1858 but died in Back creek Amherst Victoria in 1860. I have also found Joseph death record and have his death certificate. He died in Geelong VIC in 1865 age 43. On it it states that he was born in Hastings Sussex England . It does not say who his parents were . It says he lived 8 years in victoria but during those years he travelled a lot between SA and Vic. Mary Purdy died in SA about 30 years later. I hav3e my G Grandfather walter marriage certificate but it does not state where he was born

to rod1946. Thank you for reply rod. i have Walter and Selina's marriage certificate but am still none the wiser where walter was born, it didn't state that on the marriage certificatews in SA in those days.Walter just cleared out and left Selina and the kids my grandfather would have been the 3rd youngest and he was only about 3. I cant get his death certificate which would state where he was born but seeing we don't know where he died we can't get it. I did send away and got Mary Rebeccas last marriage certificate she was 60 at the time and it said that she was born in Gaweler so i presume that walter would have been born there also as going by their ages they were when they both got married there would have been only a year at most between them . I tried to get a birth certificate from SA BDM's but there was no record of it. I don't know if Joseph and mmary registered their kids birth but can't find any records for any of them.

Hi.
Since I first started working on the family tree have found out a bit more information about Joseph Pankhurst. Have his christening records, have his parents names also have christening records for a brother and 2 sisters . I think > I haven't done the Pankhurst tree for a while so will have to get it out one day.. Have found where he and his wife Mary Ann arrived in SA not the exact date if just say by Dec and the year. They had a son, Have found Mary Ann death.
also found where Joseph died which was difficult as he never died under Joseph Pankhurst, he was listed as Joshua but it was him as the death was listed in 3 different papers one under and one was Joseph Pankhurst , He is buried in West Terrace cemetery under the name of Parkhurst not Pankhurst. If you wan't to know exact date will get my records out and go through them. Still haven't found birth records for any of his children except Dorcas she was born in SA and died 2 years later in Victoria. My Great Grandfather is still v ery elusive still can't find a birth or death record for him. Have you any idea where Rebecca was born. I reckon the children had to be born in SA or possibly Vic .

Hi Heather, found some articles on Trove today.
Joseph Pankhurst's death notice in SA Weekly Chronicle 16 Sep 1882
"Pankhurst- On the 11th September, at the Adelaide Hospital, of heart disease and dropsy, Joseph Harwood Pankhurst, of Gladstone, aged 62 years. Arrived in 1838"
Mary Rebecca's 2nd marriage notice in the Advertiser on 26/11/1889: "Burrowes-Harris- On the 16th Nov at her residence, Pine Hill Farm, Thomas's Plains, By the Rev J. J. Salmon, Henry Moor Burrowes, Eldest son of William Frederick Burrowes, of Gawler, to Mary Rebecca Harris, widow of the late David Harris, and second daughter of the late Joseph Harwood Pankhurst, of Gladstone."
Joseph gives an account as a witness in an article 18/10/1875 "Fatal Occurrence at Gladstone" in the Evening Journal.
Joseph is listed in the Evening Journal (Adelaide) shipping news on 11/3/1870: As having an assignment as a labourer.
There is an article for "Job Harris" in Wikipedia. Job is a brother of David Harris, who married Mary Rebecca Pankhurst- the article mentions a bit about them.
Would appreciate the dates & places for Joseph's Christening & anything on Mary Purdy!
thanks! Berni
Hi Berni.
Thank you for your reply. I will have to get my files out about Joseph Pankhurst and go through them. I have seen those articles in the paper except the last one about the article for Job Harris must look that up. Have found another couple of articles about Joseph one of them where my G grandfather Walter Harward wanted to get married underage. I have Josephs death transcription . I haven't got very much about Mary but do have her death certificate. My email address is heatherlaverty@optusnet.com.au if you would like to email with your address I can email them to you. It will probably take a few days as have a pretty busy week this week. I am on facebook and belong to couple of genealogy sites there and have found them very helpful. Im fact that is how I found out when Joseph died, I knew he died in 1882 but could not find it anywhere. One lady on there was very helpful she was a ember of SAGHS and got me a lot of family BDM transcripts for free. I live in QLD so don't know much about SA except maybe the Riverlands as visited relatives there a few times
Bye. Heather
