* Arthur was a midshipman on the 'SY Morning,' a steam yacht, known for her role as a relief vessel to Scott's British National Antarctic Expedition. She made two voyages to the Antarctic to resupply the expedition.

Cyril Borthwick Pepper (1897-1987)
* born 3 Feb 1897, son of Richard Sandall Stennett Pepper & Susan McLachlan Borthwick of Hastings. One of three brothers who served in WWI (see family below). Cyril was a Clerk with the Union Shipping Company. He served as Lance Corporal 49167 with the 26th Reinforcements (Second Draft), NZ Field Engineers, NZEF, embarking on the Maunganui June 1917. He was discharged at termination of service, 21 March 1919

Cyril died in Wellington Hospital 30 May 1943 aged 31, after falling from a 4th storey window in Salamanca road, Kelburn, whilst walking in his sleep.
Captain Cyril Pepper (20240) was a member of the All Blacks. He played 17 matches with his team which visited Britain in 1935/36. He went overseas with the 2nd Echelon and served with distinction, gaining the Military Cross for bravery. Through being run over by a truck while in a shallow trench, he was severely hurt, lost an eye and was invalided back to NZ in June 1940. He became a staff officer at Army Headquarters, occupying the post of General Staff Officer to the 3rd Home Guard. He was particularly active in training officers and men in bush and mountain warfare. The Manukau players wore armbands in their next game in memory of Cyril who was a former member of the club's senior fifteen and an Auckland and NZ representative. He is buried at Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland

* Mary 2nd married James William Gavin (1889-1946) in 1920. In Dec 1923 she took off and lived with Frank. In Nov 1925 His Honor of the Napier Supreme Court granted a decree nisi to James to be absolute in Feb 1926. He next married Florence Olga Ling (1894-1971) in 1926 and they are buried together at Hastings.
* In June 1928 Mary & Frank were in Hasting's Court when her sister Agnes Drummond attacked her husband Charles Stephen Drummond with a beer bottle. He often retaliated her attacks. They were accused of violence against each other and that Charles also attacked Frank.
* In Sep 1928 Frank Pepper was charged with robbery with violence in the Hastings Police Court, along with Thomas Martin Power (1899-1979). They were sentenced in Nov 1928 in the Napier Supreme Court. Frank to 12 months prison and Thomas to 6 months.

NZ Mail, 7 Dec 1904 A wedding of interest was solemnised on Tuesday, when Mr George J. Pepper, eldest son of Mr J. S. Pepper, of this town, was married to Miss Nellie Staples, daughter of the late Mr Staples, also of Carterton. The bride was prettily dressed and was attended by Misses Pepper, Humphreys and Miller as bridesmaids, while Mr L. Pepper was bestman. The Church was nicely decorated and the service was a full choral one. The young couple's new home will be Eltham.

Her father worked as a Carpenter at Ogilvie's mill at Gladstone Siding, involved in the project to build removable houses. He was killed there on 23 Oct 1928 while carrying iron across the yard. He walked from between two stacks of timber, on the skids in the yard, out into the path of the yard locomotive. He was partly deaf and couldn't have heard it coming. Both his thighs and left are were fractured and he was rushed to hospital but died almost immediately.

. . Captain 20240 WWII A New Zealand rugby international. He played seventeen matches for his country on the 1935/6 tour of Britain and France, but did not play in a Test. In WWII he served as a lieutenant in the NZ Divisional Artillery and was awarded the Military Cross for action against the Afrika Corps. However he got badly injured in a car accident and was invalided home. While recuperating back home he died when he fell from the second floor of a block of flats. * son of James Alexander Pepper & Elizabeth Milne. He served in WWI as Rifleman 24/1573 with the 5th Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion, F Company, NZRB. His father, as next of kin, was living at 126 Bligh's Rd., Papanui, Christchurch. He was wounded in action in France in 1917.
