Hello, I too am new to all of this, but hey, here goes anyway.
My ancestors both on my mothers side of my family tree are Bell and Campbell.
John Bell, born 1805, originally from Cuerdale in Lancashire, near the town of Blackburn. His father was George Bell of Penrith, a tallow chandler. His mother's name was Sarah Fenton. John was the fourth of six brothers and sisters. John set off south, and found farm work with a tenant farmer Richard Milner. John married daughter Sarah, and to enable them to find a farm of their own, they immigrated to New Zealand, arriving here in 1842. John had lost touch with his family, but I do know he had brothers named Joseph and George. I have heaps of info of his life once in NZ, but maybe, some place name and people might gel with you.
My other ancestor, was Colin Campbell. Born I think in Inverary, I believe he was born in 1844. I also believe he may have been the youngest son of the Duke of Argyll. He did something to upset his family and was sent to work on the family farm on the Isle of Tiree. He had enough of that and got on a boat to go to Australia. Took one look at Australia, and stayed on the boat, and came on to NZ. He was very secretive about his origins. His children's names might have some connection to his past. Jessie, George Alister, Colina (Lena), Mary, James Bannatyne, Frances Josephine, Minnie, Normal, and Ellen Catherine (Kate).
I hope your adventure into family history is rewarding.
Warm regards, Alymae
