Porirua, New Zealand servicemen and women 1914 - 1919
I am researching men and women from Porirua, New Zealand who served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force 1914-1919.
There were a large number of young single men from the United Kingdom who were recruited in the early 1900's to work in New Zealand mental hospitals, including the Porirua Mental Hospital.
On the outbreak of WW1 a number of these men enlisted in the New Zealand Medical Corps, serving in the Samoa Advance Party (1914) and also the NZEF in campaigns in Egypt, Dardanelles and France.
With the 100th annivesary of the landings at ANZAC Cove the present focus is on those Porirua Hospital men who were in Egypt and the Gallipoli 1914 - 1916.
Stories of the following men are being prepared:
Reichart John William - KIA 1915
Gillett John Brungess
Skinner William
Hughes George William
Topham Arthur Harold
Foley Archibald
Articles on the following have been published.
3/97 Lance Corporal Wilfred Singleton DCM MID died of wounds June 1915
3/43 Temporary Major Alexander Cameron McKillop

excellent!
I look forward to reading the bios - are you going to add them to this site?
here for our readers the ones already published:
(Plimmerton Community Website)
3/97 Lance Corporal Wilfred Singleton - DCM, MID
3/43 Temporary Major Alexander Cameron McKillop
I will be adding them to the site. I'm looking for photos to go with each of the stories as I think that they add to simply text and facts and figures.
Next stories will be:
11/713 Trooper John William Reichart, Wellington Mounted Rifles. Killed in action in the Battle for Chunuk Bair 9th August 1915 (Photo wanted)
3/79 Private John Brungess Gillett No 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital. A suvivor of the sinking of the British transport Marquett in October 1915 where he was mention for gallantry in saving others. Returned to the UK in 1917 (Photo wanted)
Hello, Wilfred Singleton is my great uncle, my dads fathers brother. We have only recently found out more about the three brothers, Wilfred, Cuthbert (my grandfather) and Edmund.
Thank you from all of us on your article on Wilfred.
I have attempted to obtain more information on his time in NZ prior to fighting in the war but found it rather difficult from Australia.
Thanks again, Fiona Singleton

Wilfred was remembered on Anzac Day here in Porirua we had an exhibition at the local library/museum of Porirua Anzacs at Gallipoli and one of the panels was on your great uncle. Wilfred was one of the boys from the hospital who served during WW1.
Wilfreds name is also listed as one of those on the Roll of Honour and the local RSA (Returned Servicemen Association) is preparing to have a more permanent stone war memorial made.
I could get a pdf of the panel if you would like it.
Cheers
Allan
