Yes. The info on James Rosebottom is helpful, thank you. The Mr A. McKenzie you have mentioned, do you have more details of him, his property etc. I have him of interest in tacking down a James Kirby and aboriginal shepherd in the Tuena District.

A copy of the marriage certificate should give you more details.

On her death registration it lists her parents as Thomas & Catherine.

NSW BMD
Death
20339/1924 ROSEBOTTOM CATHERINE THOMAS CATHERINE CARCOAR

There is a family in Carcoar with Thomas & Catherine Barnes as parents one child 1861 listed only as female, this could possibly be your Catherine.

NSW BMD
Birth
6563/1859 BARNES ISABELLA THOMAS CATHERINE CARCOAR
6604/1861 BARNES FEMALE THOMAS CATHERINE CARCOAR
5390/1862 BARNES GEORGE THOMAS CATHERINE BINALONG
8040/1868 BARNES MARY A THOMAS CATHERINE CARCOAR
8986/1871 BARNES RICHARD THOMAS CATHERINE CARCOAR

I didn't find a marriage in NSW for Catherine & Thomas Barnes but the possible Female birth 1861 looks promising and it should give you the mothers maiden name.

in 1901 NSW Census

Thank you for your insight.
You list a birth in 1861 shown as illegitimate which is actually Teresa Barnes of the same parents, teresa died of head injuries the same year. Do you know of any connection to Thomas Radcliff. When catherine registers her children she uses either Barnes or Slater or Kirby. Officially her name is Kirby as she married James Kirby in 1852 at Crookwell Creek and never re-married or divorced. But was her father Thomas Slater or his brother-in-law Thomas Shea??

by asheppard on 2013-11-06 21:25:18

I'm confused.

You said -
"When Catherine registers her children she uses either Barnes or Slater or Kirby.

Officially her name is Kirby as she married James Kirby in 1852 at Crookwell Creek and never re-married or divorced."

Are you saying that Catherine Barnes who married James William Rosebottom in 1884 also married James Kirby in 1852??

But then you said "never married or divorced" so how did she marry James Rosebottom, if she never remarried???, there is a registration of the marriage to James Rosebottom.

Catherine "Slater" who married James Kirby would have been born around 1837 when she married in 1852,

And if it's the same Catherine now "Barnes" she would be 50 when she married James Rosebottom.

And if it is the same Catherine she would be 75 years old in 1909 when her daughter Dorothy was born.

I think maybe there must be two different Catherines or possibly three.

The Births of children of James W Rosebottom & Catherine till 1912

7653/1904 ROSEBOTTOM GEORGE F JAMES W CATHERINE TUENA
30939/1909 ROSEBOTTOM DOROTHY A JAMES W CATHERINE TUENA

So am I right in thinking that Catherine has some of the above children registered in Barnes some in Kirby & some in Slater??

Do you have a copy of the Marriage for James William Rosebottom to Catherine Barnes does it give any indication as to her age. i know you said it doesn't show her parents info, but there must be some clues on it.

Do you have any copies of the Birth Certificates for her children, to verify Catherine's surname??

The Catherine who uses the family name of Barnes, Kirby and Slater is born about 1835 of a mixed union between an Irish convict shepherd named Thomas ? and an aboriginal girl known as Anne ? Everyone thinks it is Thomas Slater, Its even on her Death Certificate.
Thomas Slater Married Anne Owens and moved to Port Macquarie and had several children, so her birth name is not Slater
Catherine is found wandering in Argyle county by her aunty Ellen (Shae) and husband William Slater married in 1841 and had no children. they take Catherine to live with then at Crookwell Creek. This is when Catherine becomes Catherine makes Slater her Family name(Maiden Name)
The second Catherine is an unknown until she marries James William Rosebottom in 1884 at George. The church copy of the marriage certificate has her as the daughter of Thomas Barnes and aged 18 years. Thomas Barnes signs the back of the married certificate giving consent to the marriage to James William Rosebottom. (First record of Catherine Barnes). Catherine dies at Carcoar Hospital in 1924.
Richard Barnes family notes has Catherine being born on 18th April 1865 at Grove Creek
I have been told several stories from that period that Catherine (Kirby/Barnes) appear after some time away from the household after Eliza Jane's death with a bay girl she names as Catherine. Next thing she marries James William Rosebottom.
Can someone please help fill in the detail

Hello. My great grandmother was Catherine Rosebottom who married Daniel Carney in 1912.
Her mother was Catherine Barnes whom married James Rosebottom in 1884 at Carcoar NSW.
I have Catherine's mother as Catherine Slater ( also married to Kirby) and Thomas Barnes. I have pictures and there is aboriginal descent but where or whom does it come from. Was Catherine's mother actually Anne Owens? Is this where the aboriginal descent come from because the Anne Owens I have found comes from Ireland? I have heard the stories of Catherine being taken back by her tribe and found wandering as well. I would just like to know if anyone has any records or information in regards to Thomas Slater and Anne Owens or Thomas and the aboriginal woman Anne? Im at a loss and would like any help or information if possible. Thankyou

Hey. Has anyone got anymore information relating to exactly who Anne Owen is? Or any further information? I’m trying to make the connection and still very much at a loss.
