Researching Stevens,Herbert and Hepburn Families Hunter Valley N.S.W our relatives

Question by Dahzelle

Hi I am new to this site - My sister and I are trying to locate any family members/ descendants and histories of the Stevens/Herbert and Hepburn families/individuals mainly located in the Hunter Valley areas of N.S.W - tho' we are very open to receiving and sharing information for other areas too. At the moment we are trying to locate any info on our Grandmother May Hepburn nee Stevens who died in giving birth in Dungog December 1935. May's parents were Nancy E. or A. Stevens nee Herbert and William J. Stevens who were married in 1912 in Paterson N.S.W. [We really want to find out more about them too] May our Grandmother was married to Baden Hepburn. Baden Hepburn's parents were Adeline Matilda Hepburn nee Swan and Robert Hepburn who died and was buried in Condobolin in 1907 as far as we Know.
If anybody out there has any Knowledge or information they are willing to share we would really appreciate it - we also have some to share too. Regards and Cheers , Deb.

Hi Deb, I so hope someone out there can help us find our family. Do you think it would
be terrible to ask if someone who lives in Dungog NSW could visit the Church of England
section at the Dungog Cemetery in NSW and let us know if our grandmother
May Stevens is really buried there. JALZ

Hi Jo - Lovely idea - really hope some one can- how about posting the details from her Death Certificate as well - might help. Dahzelle xxx

I read postings on geneology site and very much appreciated but very confusing. We need to
concentrate on establishing our Grandma's true parents. Not forgetting there were 2 Nancy Herberts. On Grandma's death cert her mom was listed as Nancy Herbert ...so was she Nancy (1875) or Nancy E (1886). No Nancy A listed on births between 1800-1900 so I don't know where that initial came from. Need to find out about Main Creek via Dungog? What was it back in 1935....a town, campsite or what?
I emailed twice and rang Dungog Shire for help re info on Church of England Cemetery Dungog but no one has come back. Jalz xxx

Hey Daz
I found death cert for Rachel B Hepburn (Mom's sister). They messed up with the names though...typical!!
Dad: Baden and Mother: Mary instead of May - 13071/1934 Paterson. I saw this before but discounted it
because of error in the name. Jalz xxx

There are a couple of books available containing the Dungog Cemetery Index either to buy through the Society of Australian Genealogists or you could try your library

by asheppard on 2011-12-02 20:58:39

You have Adeline Matilda Swan married to Robert Hepburn but according to NSW BDM she married William Lawson Hepburn not Robert Hepburn

7498/1891 HEPBURN WILLIAM L SWAN ADELINE M TAMWORTH

This is Baden Hepburn Birth Reference from NSW BMD
339/1906 HEPBURN BADEN ROBERT MATILDA SYDNEY

his mothers name is Matilda, a copy of his Birth certificate will give you more information on his parents and the details should also be on his marriage certificate.

I have found a marriage between Robert William Hepburn and Matilda Amos but it is in Tasmania in 1869, it could be a possibility you would have to check the details against Badens Birth Certificate.

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950 about Robert William Hepburn
Name: Robert William Hepburn
Spouse Name: Maitlda Amos
Marriage Date: 29 Sep 1869
Marriage Place: Tasmania
Registration Place: Glamorgan, Tasmania
Registration Year: 1869
Registration Number: 111

There is this entry in the National Archives
Item details for: B884, N272930
Title
HEPBURN BADEN : Service Number - N272930 : Date of birth - 07 Feb 1907 : Place of birth - SDNEY NSW : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - DEAVES JEAN

Information is not available to view on line yo would need to request a copy. Who is Jean Deaves?? another avenue to search.

Dear asheppard firstly Thank You for your help - we now have some more leads to investigate. Wonderful !

As for Baden and Jean Deaves my theory [ I found it too in the N/Archives sometime ago]is: After Baden gave Jeanette and Alwyn up for adoption he enlisted in 1939 - his date of birth was out by 1 year he was actually born in 1906. Jean Deaves was also listed as wife and next of kin to a Walter [ I think] Deaves [ I have all of this written down somewhere] anyway my theory is that Baden may have been boarding in their house or friends with them - Baden was also a ward of state placed in an orphanage at a very young age by Matilda Hepburn. I don't think he had anyone else to leave his 'worldly goods' to she he die in the war etc... I don't understand why he didn't state William and Nancy Stevens as next of kin [ there a few unanswered questions there ]

Now Baden did Marry Again - 10573/1956 Hepburn Baden to Florence Smith Paddington he would have been about 50 years old at the time. [ more 'stuff' to investigate]

Baden died 13365/1976 in Petersham.

AS for Matilda Hepburn - my theory is that she was married to William Hepburn and had an affair with Robert Hepburn resulting in the birth of Baden in 1906 a year before Robert Hepburn's death in 1907 ...there is a bit of conflicting info re: Badens birth Father details and who was stated as his father on N.S.W b/d/m/ and on his ward of state papers. Which we also need to investigate.

Thank you so much again - Please if you find any more info we would be so grateful !

Hey Daz
I have been at it all day and I found two anglican churches/cemeteries in dungog. St Peter's Anglican Church Cemetery and also St. Peter's Bendolba. I hope Grandma will be in one of those. Tried to find a name list but not successful. I have phone number so will call them in the morning. Will also see if they have our aunt (little) Rachel B listed as well. Will also give the funeral people a follow up call.

Once we know where grandma is buried, I am going to give her, on our behalf, what she deserves
- a special plark so her grave will be marked and she can rest in peace knowing we found her
and that we love her. jalz

On William Lawson Hepburn's death he lists his parents as John & Marion

9394/1866 HEPBURN WILLIAM L JOHN MARION HARTLEY

Birth for Robert Hepburn who died in Condobolin in 1904 his age is out he was only 38. Looks like he may have been an only child.

10799/1866 HEPBURN ROBERT ROBERT BARBARA FORBES

Robert Hepburn b1866 father Robert died 1868 Forbes buried in Condobolin Pioneer Cemetery and his mother Barbara remarried in 1872 to John Gray in Forbes.

All of William and Adeline Matilda's children were born in Narrabri
Una 1892, Ross 1894, Lionel 1897, Marion 1899 and Herbert 1904
that is 700 kms away from Robert Hepburn of Condobolin.

Robert Hepburn married Emily J Davis in Hillston NSW 1888 had three children
Edith 1888 Hillston, Minor 1891 Hillston and Christopher 1897 Condobolin. Emily J Hepburn married Charles H Cabot in 1907 Condobolin.

I don't think it is possible for the Robert Hepburn of Condobolin to be Baden's father. It looks like there are two different Robert's and two Matilda's

Are you absolutely positive that Adeline Matilda Hepburn is Badens Mother or is there another Matilda Hepburn???? It doesn't look like William and Robert are brothers they could however be cousins.

What information does Baden's Birth Certificate give you. It normally has the mothers maiden name listed. Does it match with Adeline Matilda Swan or possibly someone else. Does the information match to his marriage certificate to May Stevens in 1932??
Is his fathers name Robert consistent on the four certificates his Birth, both Marriages and his Death certificates.

The connections you have to Robert Hepburn b1866, d1904 just doesn't seem to be matching up with Baden at the moment.

Dear ashepphard - Yes it has all been a bit mystifying. You have been absolutely Wonderful with all of the information you have found and shared with us. Just Fantastic! Anyway my sister Jo has come into some news from Baden's Birth certificate- she has just received- which I am hoping she will post as soon as she can - we have a family emergency at the moment to deal with [illness with a very special elderly family member] so we will need to defer our re-search for just a little while.

Merry Christmas to you with all our Thanks and Appreciation

Hi Daz - Matilda is a HEPBURN (place of birth Sydney) at 22yrs of age married Robert Burnes
(43 years of age - no place of birth. He was a general commission agent). Got married in
Melbourne Victoria 1901. Her married name became MATILDA BURNES. Baden was born BAYDEN BURNES 8th feb 1906 Womens hospital crown Street, I suppose Sydney??

Matilda changed Baden to a Hepburn - doesn't say what date?? Doesn't say she changed her name back to Hepburn - she is still listed on there as MATILDA BURNES.

No listing under BDM NSW or Melbourne for a Robert and or Matilda Burnes. Don't exist.
How do we know Adeline Matilda Hepburn is her name. She is only listed as Matilda BURNES
(nee HEPBURN)?????

BAYDEN BURNES & BAYDEN HEPBURN (same person)
2 birth certs same number 339/1906 (one under Burnes plus one under Hepburn). They
only sent me one (Hepburn version). Since the same number applies to both certs, it is
the same person and since they knew he was a BURNES - why didn't they advise me and
given me the opportunity to pay more if I had to. Disappointed.....Jalz

by jalz on 2011-12-16 10:27:01

Hi Daz I have posted looking for Robert Burnes Victoria/NSW. Can't find anything on him as yet.
No place of birth listed - so where does one start? Jalz

by jalz on 2011-12-30 15:28:52

Hi Daz I have been going over all info. May Stevens supposed parents (William James Stevens and Nancy Alice Herbert) were married in Gresford Wallarobba Shire (not Paterson) 13.06.1912.

Nancy Alice (Herbert) Stevens died 21.7.1963 @ 75yrs means she was born in 1888 and would have been 24yrs when married in 1912 and yes that works.
Supposed son Stevens Clive Joseph died 28 Dec 1973 67yrs works as Nancy Alice would have been 18yrs when he was born 1906 but his father being William James Stevens is questionable unless they lived together for 6yrs before getting married in 1912.

William James Stevens who died 1985 @ 68yrs is not the right one as he would have been born in 1917. We need to find another William James Stevens. Jalz

by jalz on 2011-12-30 16:39:06

Hi Daz I have gone through the Herbert births 1840 -1910 (father john and mother harriet) all born in paterson bar one of them. I can only find 9 and not 10
William 14601/1881 Mary Jane 16534/1883 Charles 18734/1885
Nancy E 19774/1886 James 28211/1890 Margaret 12269/1894 (born Dungog)
Elizabeth AM 25697/1895 Harriet E 6205/1898 Louisa 33679/1899
I would say that William was their first born and Louisa was their last child.

I found something - I typed Herberts in error and found in deaths
Herberts John (father William J and mother Ann) West Maitland 18133/1919.
Maybe he was put as Herberts instead of Herbert?
Jalz

by jalz on 2011-12-30 17:54:25

Hi Dalz
I found the 10th child. Henry (died) 2985/1912 paterson. I assume born and died same time

Margaret born dungog 1269/1894 died Dungog 4910/1894
James (Edward James) died 106066/1978 (district not listed)
William (William John) born 1881 and died paterson 34677/1967 (father listed but not mother)
Harriet E (Eliza Harriet) born 1898 and died maitland 33757/1969

Can't find Charles so he may have moved to another state. Girls impossible to find as
they would have got married - so no finding Mary Jane, Elizabeth AM or Louisa as Herbert.
jalz

by jalz on 2011-12-30 18:02:21

Dalz
There was a John and Harriet in Maitland but there was also a John and Harriet in Paterson.
All the kids listed (bar Margaret born and died in Dungog) were born in Paterson.

One kid I listed in deaths Eliza Harriet died in Maitland. I may have confused this one with
one of the kids Harriet E born in Paterson. I think.

was Harriett belcher buried as a belcher or a herbert? On marriage cert for William and Nancy
Harriett was listed as a spinster.

Which one of these births belong to Harriett Belcher
father charles/mother mary 6900/1856 paterson
father thomas/mother frances adora 21814/1943 paddington
father james/mother harriet 13449/1872 gulgong

Jalz Really Well Done !

My Sis and I live approx 2,400 kms apart so you can imagine what it may involve trying to co-ordinate our research and findings. She did an almost all-nighter discovering all of her recent posts here.

and Jalz - re: William James Stevens who died 1985 @ 68yrs is not the right one as he would have been born in 1917. We need to find another William James Stevens. Jalz

I believe that he would have been another son to William J.Stevens and Nancy A.
Stevens nee Herbert - another Uncle for us and brother for May Hepburn nee Stevens.

Anyway I will get on with it and try to find some more answers to the new questions raised.

by jalz on 2012-01-01 00:56:13

Hi Dahz
I went through bdm and found marriages for what I think are the kids of John & Harriett
all in the paterson area - place they were all born. It makes sense to me and hopefully
this will help others who are researching the Herbert family:

Harriet E Herbert (born 1898) married in paterson 9358/1919 to Arthur W Herbert
Elizabeth AM Herbert (born 1895) married in paterson 3097/1916 to William GE Rumbel
Charles Herbert (born 1885) married in Paterson 4304/1903 to Amelia M Daniels
James Herbert (born 1890) married in Dungog 9336/1918 to Beatrice M Hancock

I found two for William
William Herbert (born 1881) married in Paterson 12737/1926 to Lillian F Dimmock
William John Herbert (born 1881) married in Paterson 7363/1901 to Lucy Daniels

Mary Jane Herbert (born 1883) - I couldn't find anything with name in full but I did find
Mary J Herbert - 4518/1900 in paterson to a Walter Daniels. I found 3 others for Mary J but
wrong areas.

Here's one for the books. Did you know that William Herbert was originally William Lonn?
Well I researched marriages - same number
3637/1873 - Harriett Belcher of patricks plain married William Herbert
3637/1873 - Harriet Belcher of patricks plain married William Herbert Lonn

Hey dahz I have a question,
Sylvia kindly advised the following certificate detail
Nancy Alice Herbert married William James Stevens 1912/12931 Paterson. I applied
for this (1912/12931) and I was sent a different number 1912/010931.
I was wondering why the number was different and whether it holds the same information?
Jalz

by jalz on 2012-01-01 08:28:47

Hi Dalz
I am wondering if the Dungog Info Centre still sells books re Dungog Cemetery Anglican and
Uniting Section hopefully from 1923. Our Grandmother May (buried as Mary Stevens in
Dec 1935) will more than likely be in the Webbers Creek Road site (unmarked grave). We may
also find our Aunt little Rachel B there too.
