RICHARDS AND MUSGROVE, TWO PIONEERING FAMILIES OF GREENVALE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.

Journal by itellya

I found a 1887 marriage notice last night which I was going to add to my dictionary history of Bulla but my internet was playing up, and it would not submit. I'd copied my research onto a word document but it would not save so I'd decided to forget about my loss until I googled Joseph George Richards, one of the results being:
GREENVALE PRIMARY SCHOOL 1868 - 2010
greenvaleps.vic.edu.au/wp-content/.../Greenvale_Primary_School_1868_to_2010.pdf

Extracts of “My Dad” by Harold C Richards about his father Herbert Musgrove Richards.
Herbert Musgrove Richards was born at Greenvale on the 23rd of June 1888. He was a past pupil of the
Greenvale Primary School from 1893 to 1905. His dad was Joseph George Richards, born 13 April 1867,
his mother was Elizabeth Musgrove.
His mum and dad lived in “Acacia” in Greenvale Road, which is now called Somerton Road; they were
farmers. He started school around 1893 at the Greenvale State School.
He learnt to write on a slate with slate pencils. He learnt to spell and was good at arithmetic. His hand
writing was copper plate using steel nibs and blue and black ink.
He was good at school and won book prizes. He played cricket, hop scotch and marbles. His Aunts lived
up the road and he would take them a billy of milk every morning before going school. When he was 12
years old he left school and went to work.

In about 1990, Sid Lloyd of Tullamarine drove me to Essendon and introduced me to Bob Blackwell. Bob grew up on Blackwells Lane at Bulla and drove me on a history tour of Bulla and Greenvale. One stop was at the north west corner of Oaklands and Somerton Rds, at that time the Ponderosa Zoo. Bob told me that James Musgrove was a famed implements maker and a pioneering photographer, who insisted on being called James rather than Jim and had the first telephone in the district and himself installed an extension from house to implement factory on that zoo site. The next block to the east belonged to the Richards family. (It was possibly the property "Acacia" mentioned above.) Bob told me that a sister of James had married Cr. Richards of Bulla Shire. The part of Greenvale (including the Musgrove and Richards properties) west of where the Moonee Ponds Creek passes under Somerton Rd was in the parish of Bulla, thus in the shire of Bulla.

Judith Durham of "The Seekers" has attempted to compile her (Greek) ancestry on her website, but with little luck because of errors in BDM and family notices. It was when I was scrolling down to the marriage notice of her great grandmother's second marriage in the Leader that I stumbled upon the following, where the groom's given names are written in the wrong order.

Richards— Musgrove.— On the 17th November, at Fitzroy, by tho Rev. N. Kinsman, George Joseph, second youngest son of William Richards, of Kerrisdale,to Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Thomas Musgrove,of Greenvale, Oaklands Junction. (P.42, Leader, 3-12-1887.)

Neil Mansfield's excellent Bulla Cemetery burial list http://www.ozgenonline.com/~nhm_cemeteries/Bulla_Cemetery/_surname.html
shows that Joseph and Elizabeth were both buried at Bulla and also that Elizabeth's sister, Ellen, also became Mrs Richards. There were many RICHARDS and MUSGROVE burials at this cemetery. (NEIL AND I ARE BOTH RELATED TO THE MUSGROVES.)

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.
