Ross migration to Australia
George Washington Ross came to Australia from Norfolk England around 1850. He married Catherine Johnson in Melbourne after the middle of 1851. They had one son Joseph then two daughters who both died in infancy in Geelong. His profession was hotel keeper. He became a miner after 1858 in Redbank Victoria. They had another son Robert born there in 1861. He went to the Lachlan District of N.S.W where he died in 1862.
He was my great grandfather and I would like to trace his English family in Norfolk, his ship to Australia, his place and circumstances of death.

I have one George Ross listed in the UK 1841 Census in Norfolk, he was aged 10, do you think it might be your George? He is living with is parents and 8 siblings. You you have any idea how old he was when he died?
Yes, although we do not have a death certificate, on his son's birth certificate in 1861 he was shown as age 37, born Norfolk, England. I understand that the 1841 census rounded off the ages of children so it is a possibility but regrettably unlikely. Does the family show up on the 1851 or 1861 census?
I have researched about 30 Ross families in Norfolk and found only one George [Wilde] Ross, son of Robert and Elizabeth nee Wilde born Dec. 1829 but as he shows up in later census as still in England I've discared him!
Many thanks for your interest.

Do you have a copy of the marriage for George & Catherine, it should give you further clues to Georges father.
Thanks. I have Robert's birth and death certificates and Joseph's death certificate.
I cannot find Joseph's birth certificate but believed to be in Geelong 1851/52.
I cannot find a marriage certificate for George and Catherine but said to be in Melbourne on Robert's birth Certificate,
I cannot find any passanger records for either George or Catherine but Catherine is shown on the 1851 U K Census.
I cannot find a death Certificate for George but known to be in the Lachlan District of NSW in 1862.
I have the marriage certificate for Catherine and John Edwards in Avoca Victoria in Sept. 1866. I have a full history on Catherine's ancestors for several generations.
