Searching for info on ROSS and BALDOCK families
My great grandmother was Harriet Ross, born circa 1839, probably Richmond Tasmania. I have her death certificate which states her father was Simon Ross, mother unknown.
Simon Ross, b. 1801 St Andrews Edinburgh to Alexander Ross and Eupham/Euphemia Ross was tried on 16 Dec 1822 and transported to Australia arriving in Jan.1824 on the ship Asia. He married Ann Baldock, also a convict on 29.9.1834.In that year Simon received a Conditional Pardon for his crime. Their children included Lucy Ann, George, Mary and Simon all born in Tasmania. I can find no birth cert for Harriet, nor a marriage cert. Ann Baldock was single with one child when she was transported in in 1833 so I have wondered whether Harriet may have been her child but there is nothing anywhere to support this. On the contrary, other research suggests Harriet was Simon and Ann's daughter. On his convict record it states that Simon Ross was "very respectably connected". Certainly the family has a long and respected history in Richmond. I have tried to learn more of Simon's parents but as the name ROSS is so common, it is difficult to ensure that I have found the correct family. Was he related to any of the Earls of Ross? The MUNRO and NEWMORE names appear to be connected with surname ROSS with individuals adopting other surnames, including ROSS. It's all very confusing.Simon Ross died in Richmond, Tasmania on 19 Dec 1881.
From IGI I have the following:
Alexander Ross, b. circa 1768 of St Andrews Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Wife: Eupham Ross b. circa 1772 as above
Children: George Ross b. 31 Jul 1794 as above
Eupham Ross b. 5 April 1796 as above
Alexander Ross b.6 Dec 1797 as above
Christian Ross. b.30 Sep 1799 as above
Simon Ross. b. 28 Sep 1801 as above
I have quite a lot of info now on Simon's descendants but not his ancestry. I have been researching this family for more than a decade. I am very happy to share the info I have. Can anyone help?

There was a Harriett ROSS (aged 20) and John James CHAMBERS (aged 21)
married in Tasmania on the 17 March 1859.
The age fits your Harriet ROSS born c.1839. Could this be the marriage you are looking for? This is the only Harriet(t) ROSS I could locate in the Tasmanian marriages.
How wonderful to have discovered this website.I am simon and anns great great great grand-daughter, descended from Harriet. As far as I have been able to discover Harriet was married (or lived with)George Arnell. Incidentally, my beautiful grandmother Born Harriet Lowrie was obviously named after Harriet Ross.
Cheers
Chris
Thank you "tonkin". I have found this record before which is really intriguing as Harriet's only mention of a marriage date to George Arnell on a death cert states she was married on 17 March 1858 (exactly one year earlier than John James Chamber's marriage. Her children all have the name Arnell, not Chambers. There is no official record I can find of her marriage to George Arnell.
To Chris: I have had contact from a researcher via Ancestry or Genes Reunited with info on the Lowrie/Lourie family. Are you the same person? Neelowe, can you give me more info please. Thank you, Rosemary
by neelowe. Yes Rosemary I am the person, but I really have not gotten any further.
Cheers Chris
