Seeking Diane Jordon, who requested information re: Esther Bertha Fantham & David Charteris family

Article by jeanette_charteris

Greetings to you all.
I am a great grand daughter of Esther & David Charteris; in fact, I would be only one of many of their descendants.
My interest in genealogy has been here for some years and I have some information for Diane Jordon who is also related to our ancesters. David Charteris was born in Corsua, Dumfries, Dumfresshire, Scotland in June 1843 - 1929 and came to New Zealand, arriving in Lyttleton some years after the lady whom he would later meet and wed. David's mother was Helen Bell who was married to his father, James Charteris also from Dumfries).Esther Fantham hailed from Ellesborough,Wendover,Buckinghamshire, UK and was born in 1848 - 1943
The two met and married at the Manse in Christchurch. My grandfather,Ernest James Charteris was the second of fourteen children and my father (Walter 'Bruce') was the third son of Ernest Charteris & Ruby Elizabeth Grace Hansen.(Ruby was born in Victoria, Australia and they married in Kalgoolie, W.A, before coming to New Zealand in 1905). They had a daughter, Florence Annie.James Seddon C. & Arthur Joseph C. were their elder siblings.
If you read this information Diane, you may remember meeting me in Christchurch in the 1980's. I gave you my copies of photographs taken at the Charteris Reunion held in Wanganui in 1984? and never did get any to replace.Look forward to reuniting and sharing more info.

Dear Jeanette,

I certainly do remember you. That was a long time ago. We now live in Brisbane. I wondered what happened to you and your children. I remember you as soon as you mentioned Jeanette Avery. I have one photo of the reunion of a crowd of Charteris descendants. Much love to you and your family. Diane.

Hello Diane, My husband and I are heading for Australia in August/September and will visit Victoria,Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It would be lovely to catch up after so many years.I looked at your maternal family, 'Howitt'and found some electoral rolls citing their names in Patea and also in Wellington (East). At this stage, I am not clear on who Isabella Alphina's parents were. Perhaps you may have found this out already. Here are two lots: 1. 1896 Electoral Roll in Patea, Taranaki, N.Z. lists William King Howitt - Baker,Alexander Mackay Howitt - Storekeeper, Isabella Howitt - Housekeeper, Isabella Alphina Howitt - Spinster, William Howitt - Baker.
2. 1914 Electoral Roll in Wellington East: Isabella Howitt - 32 Mahora Street - Married.Alexander Mackay Howitt - 32 Mahora Street - Settler.David Richard Howitt - 69 Dock Street - Bootmaker. Florence Louisa Howitt - 69 Dock Street - Married.Clara Louisa Howitt - 3 Austin Tce - Married. Ad Howitt - 3 Austin Tce - Draughtsman.

I too, hope you and your family are all well. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there, this is so interesting. My family is from Taranaki and my Grandfather was John Alfred Charteris who passed away Aug 2008 at age 89. His father was David John Charteris where they were from Waverley. I was also at the family reunion in 1984 but was age 2 in a pram.

Lovely to meet you Kylee. I guess we are all related to David & Esther Charteris through one of their offspring or another.
I was a way bit older than you were at the reunion. My father (Walter Bruce Charteris) had died in November 1983. He would have enjoyed meeting up with a lot of his relatives in Wanganui.
My daughter would have been in her eleventh year. Tarena is forty now.
Where do you live now?My husband and I have recently moved to Ngongotaha (near Rotorua)which is my birth place. My married name is 'Healand'

Hi Jeanette
I am currently in Wairoa farming with my fiancee and working for the BNZ in Gisborne. My father John Francis Charteris is buried at the cemetery at Ngongataha. He sadly passed away in March 2011 age 58. I miss him dearly.

Hello Kylee,It was great hearing from you. I had a brother named David John Charteris who died in 2006. He was only in his sixty first year. My immediate family were all born in Rotorua. There are only ten of us out of the thirteen children still living. They range from the eldest who is seventy-three in March to the youngest who is fifty-three in February 2014. I am the the sixth eldest. We have a young brother who was stillborn buried at Ngongotaha Cemetery. I must check out your father's grave (if it is named) when next visited. One of my brother's, (Martin) has three farms a little out of Gisborne. My father was a farmer and had a property in Mamaku before moving to Ruatoria and purchasing Driftwood Station. This is no longer part of the family as it has since been sold. Dad is buried at Ruatoria. When you are next in Ngongotaha, please call and make yourself known. Kindest regards,Jeanette
