Raymond Charles Courtney was born in Carthage, NY, June 10, 1901 to James A. Courtney and Nina A. Westcott Courtney. Raymond had two sisters, Goldie Courtney (married Ford, Burr) and Hazel Courtney (married Fitzgerald) The Courtney's moved to Hartford Connecticut before 1920.

Raymond married Marjorie May Faircloth (b. 2/6/1902; E.Haddam CT)in 1923 in Glastonbury, CT. They had one son, Neil James Courtney, born in Hartford, CT in 1924. Raymond and Marjorie divorced in 1930. He later married Eleanor Lynch, the marriage ended in divorce.

According to Raymond's death cert. and other newspaper sources, he owned his own photography business in Hartford for approximately 20 years until his death in 1952 in Hartford, CT. The business name was "Photo Arts" with address listed as 111 Maple Ave. His residential address at the time was on Front St.
