SHAW Abraham married to SARAH BURTENSHAW 14th April 1763 in Warnham, Sussex

I cannot find where ABRAHAM SHAW was born.

RICHARD SHAW - Abraham's son christened 15/07/1770 christened in Bolney Sussex, who later married HETTY DURRANT 16/04/1798 in Ringmer, Sussex.

There are two branches of Shaws - one from Abraham Shaw, the other from THOMAS SHAW who marred MARY NAYLARD in Nuthurst, Sussex, Engand.

Both these families came together when my great, great, grandparents ELIHU SHAW (son of JOHN SHAW), he was a second cousin, employed as a Gardener in the Estate of RICHARD SHAW (Abraham Shaw's son?), and eloped with their daughter MARIA HELEN SHAW. I believe Richard Shaw was a large landowner, timber etc.

Any details or gaps that can be filled in this story, would be wonderful.

Hi,

I too have been looking for his place of birth, though I believe I have found his date of birth from his burial record.

SFHG search:
Name Abraham Shaw
Event Type Burial
Event Date 24 Feb 1821
Event Place Bolney, Sussex, England
Age 87
Birth Year (Estimated) 1734

However, I have found an elder brother for Richard and Sarah, namely, Abraham Shaw jnr, born in 1767.

Familysearch:
Name Abraham Shaw
Gender Male
Christening Date 08 Nov 1767
Christening Place OAKWOOD,SURREY,ENGLAND
Father's Name Abraham Shaw
Mother's Name Sarah

Oakwood is about 4 miles from Warnham.

This would also explain why the apparent first born (Richard born in Bolney) is not named after his father Abraham, since he is the second son. The link also ties together the two Shaw families in Lewes – Richard’s and Abraham jnr. Both families also lived in Isfield at one time – Richard before moving to Cliffe until 1802, with a crossover with Abraham jnr thereafter. Both families are nonconformists.

I suggest you look at the Sussex Weald website where I post most of my research. Google Sussex Weald Richard Shaw, and then the same for Abraham Shaw – you can then view both families. The website will probably update the data by the new year, showing the linkage between the two families.

Hello Brian,

I have only just found the valuable information you provided. It has been so helpful to understand the crossover of both families, as this has been very hard to unravel.

I have, as you suggested looked at the Sussex Weald Website for more information.

Thanks, again.
