SMITH of Texas

Query by Treenut67

I don't know how to find ancestors that were between censuses. My gr gr grandmother Melinda Elizabeth McCarley was married to a Smith right after the 1870 census and was either widowed or divorced before the 1880 census. She had two daughters, Julia Fredona Smith and Alice B. Smith before she married her 2nd husband George Clayton Neill, either while she was pregnant with Alice or right after her birth. They lived in Texas. But in 1880 had moved to New Mexico. All the trees I have found show Julia and Alice with the surname Neill while still living with their mother, which is false. Can anyone out there help me?
