Hi Morgan.

The only other variations located in South Australia are SOLDON and SOLDAN. If you include the BDM you are looking for I will do a few more searches.

Hi tonkin

Looking for a Richard Solden.
I have information on Mary Jones (nee Solden), died 2nd May 1871 in Geelong, Victoria. Born 21st October 1822. She arrived in South Australia prior to 1859. So I need to check all Solden's in South Australia, around Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. Trying to find a link to Mary's Family in South Australia.

by tonkin on 2016-05-07 22:31:17

No luck finding Richard or Mary SOLDEN in South Australia to date but found a few others.

Eliza SOLDEN
and George KIPPIST had nine children in South Australia between the years 1855 and 1872.

Susan SOLDEN
and Frederick KIPPIST had one child in South Australia in 1875.

Susan SOLDON
and Herbert LAURIE had one child in South Australia in 1878.

Enid SOLDAN
and John Bernard MAHER one child South Australia 1923.

Samuel SOLDEN
and Maude SUTHERLAND had one child in South Australia in 1884.

No marriages recorded in South Australia for the above. It's not a common name so it's possible they may be connected. Will have a look at the Victorian records and will let you know if I find any further details.

Cheers.

Thanks Tonkin
How do you order SA records? The most painful process.
Trying to find a death for William Jones (husband of Mary Solden) died 18th November 1860

by tonkin on 2016-05-08 05:08:17

DEATH.

Name: William JONES.
Died: 18 November 1860.
Place: Adelaide, South Australia.
Residence: Adelaide.
Age: 48 years.
Status: Not recorded.

Ref: Registry of Deaths, South Australia. Book 9 Page 196.

Current cost and ordering details can be obtained from the South Australian BDMs online. From memory Death Certificates for 1860 don't tell you much so check before ordering. I'm having trouble with Internet Explorer at the moment and unable to find out any further details. It never works when you need it.

Please tell us more young janilye.

She did leave behind a nine year old girl.
He was on a pension from the army back in the old country. He didn't work, started drinking and knocked her around. She ended up leaving for Melbourne and he cut his throat.
The strange thing about it is (yes another strange thing) The doctor came and got the neighbours to push him to the hospital in a cart. There the doctor sewed him up and he looked as if he might make it. But somehow the doctor's sewing left a lot to be desired and the patient sprang a leak and started bleeding from the eyes and nose and succumbed a few minutes later.
I'm looking for the inquest!

William Jones Inquest
There is an article in the German newspaper, Colonielle Angelegenheiten. which if translated might yeild more since she was of German origin

Of interest.

I only found the one death for a William JONES in South Australia for the year 1860 and his age was given as 48 years.

Looking at the West Terrace Cemetery records I find the burial for William JONES and his date of death was given as 19 November 1860, and his age was given as 70 years.

The date of death given may be the date of burial, but this does not explain the age difference of 22 odd years.

Could this be the same William JONES?

by janilye on 2016-05-08 07:38:50

yield!
The little girl was 7 not 9.
Yes from what I have read he was much older than her.
Rootschat Forum
I don't have any details.
Perhaps the actual inquest records give the right age.

Thanks Tonkin and Janilye
I just consider Williams death as a shaving mishap.

by janilye on 2016-05-08 19:03:19

Hahahaha you could say that.
And who's to say it wasn't ?

by Morgan2409 on 2016-05-09 05:03:33

Like a Gentleman, he died Clean Shaven

William was my great great grandfather I believe. But can't prove it. I Believe that the daughter was Rose Hannah Jones. It appears that this Willian Jones enlisted as a Drummer Boy in the 6th Regiment of Foot serving in India, Africa, France and at Fort Niagara in Canada. He served all his life being promoted to Colour Sergeant. He was discharged due to wear and tear.

What confuses me is why was one daughter left behind and what happened to her after his suicide

by tonkin on 2016-05-09 19:41:52

Could this be the death of the daughter left behind.

Name: Jane Ellen BROOKS.
Died: 1925 Melbourne West, Victoria.
Age: 72 years.
Father: William John JONES.
Mother: Mary SOLDEN.
Ref: Registry of Deaths, Victoria. Reg. #10795.

If Jane's age at death is correct she was born circa 1853 and would have been about seven years old when William died.

Have not located a marriage or any children for BROOKS and JONES as yet but it's possible this may have ben a second marriage for Jane. Not knowing the given name/s for this BROOKS makes record searches difficult.

by Morgan2409 on 2016-05-09 20:32:01

My mistake it would be Jane Ellen Jones. First marriage was to August Wilson in South Australia. Will give more details when I get home from work

by tonkin on 2016-05-09 21:57:04

Disregard I found Jane's two marriages.

1st marriage.
August WILSON 1876 Victoria. Reg. #3600.

2nd marriage.
Phillip John BROOKS 1919 Victoria. Reg. #4129R.

by tonkin on 2016-05-09 22:41:15

You may have these details.
It appears William and Mary spent a bit of time in Victoria before moving to South Australia.

BIRTH.

Name: Eve JONES.
Born: 1859 East Collingwood, Victoria.
Father: William JONES.
Mother: Mary SOLDEN.
Reg. #10763.

DEATH.

Name: Eve JONES.
Died: 1860 Victoria.
Age: 07 months.
Father: William JONES.
Mother: Mary SOLDEN.
Reg. #221.

by Morgan2409 on 2016-05-09 23:52:09

The whole family arrived in South Australia. Mary and all children except one daughter came to Melbourne around 1859. Mary must have been pregnant with Eve. Eve was the only child born in Australia. Mary died I think in 1870 at Rosemary lane Geelong and is buried in Geelong Cemetery. Jane Brooks is buried in Melbourne
