Talty Family in New Zealand

Journal by michaeltalty

I am seeking information about all Talty family members in New Zealand.

Particularly about Hugh Talty who served in the 57th and his brother Patrick Talty.

I am looking to find out more detail on who Bridget Talty and Kate Talty married after arriving on the Inverness in 1876.

Many Thanks

hi Michael,
Hugh Talty (1831-1879), of County Clare, was Sergeant-Major in the 57th (Die Hards). He was discharged in 1867. He was then living in Te Awamutu. He married in Taupo to Merania Ihaia Tehina. He died in Auckland of a stroke

Patrick Talty (1837-1924) joined the 57th in 1856 when he was 19 and served in the Crimea 1857-58 then left there for NZ to serve during the Maori war. He married Mary Gorman (1835-1918) in 1870. They are buried in Hawera

a Bridget Talty married John O'Brien 13 Feb 1882
a Catherine 'Kate' Talty married Michael O'Connor 20 May 1890

Thank you ngairedith. I am trying to link these Talty back to their Irish Family roots and add to http://www.taltyfamilyroots.org/records/login.php And as I live across the sea I don't have any way of visiting archives or libraries except by online. So I am most appreciative of any assistance to help preserve the family ties between Oceania and County Clare.

Hugh Talty from the database on the Armed Constabulary on the Auckland Library website says he was born in Kilkee Co Clare Ireland. I was looking to find out who his parents were. Any ideas? I believe that both Hugh and Patrick were brothers but the website's info is not helpful in giving Patrick's birthplace. Did Patrick have any children?

According to NZ BDM there are two Bridget Taltys
1890/1285 Catharine Talty Michael O'Connor
1882/444 Bridget Talty John Obrien
1879/415 Bridget Mary Talty Joseph John Linden (or is this somthing different ?)

I am trying to sort out which one is which. I believe that Michael Talty and his wife Bridget Barry came out on the Inverness in Nov 1876 and had a child Thomas C Talty who ended up in Sydney. Michael Talty died in 1877 in Naiper an was buried there. (the name was Tatty in the online database. I am guessing that Michael Talty's parents were Peter Talty and Mary Corry and Bridget's family lived around Naiper. I am also guessing that Kate (Catherine) and Bridget were also on the Inverness and were most likely sisters of Michael. I wonder if one of this Bridget has remarried hence the second Bridget. Assistance needed with sorting out this.

There is another Michael Talty who died in 1867 the inquest is recorded in the pastpapers but death record does not appear on the online database. He is buried in the Notown cemetery and this has been confirmed. I would be looking to find out something of his story and find his parents in Ireland.

I can also find a Hugh Talty who is buried in an Auckland Cemetery (West?) who died on the 22 Nov 1961 aged 89yrs. Do you have any info on him and who his parents might be please?
Michael

Bridget & Kate WERE on the Inverness, both from County Clare travelling in the Single Women quarters. Bridget is listed as age 22, birth year c1854 & Kate was 17, birth year c1859

Michael & Bridget (nee Barry) from County Clare listed their ages as 28 & 20. This gives an approx birth dates as: Michael 1848 & Bridget 1856.
They married about a year when the emigrated. The Inverness arrived in Napier 29 Oct 1876. Michael & Bridget had a son (named Thomas Christopher Talty) 2 months later, on Xmas Eve 1876. Thomas died in Parramatta, Sydney in 1950.
Because Michael died at the young age of 35 in 1877 it is more than possible that Bridget remarried

If you bring up all the recorded deaths for Bridget O'Brien on BDM from 1879 you get this: (I have removed those that are obviously not her)
1879 - Bridget O'Brien aged 29
1884 - Bridget O'Brien aged 23
1884 - Bridget O'Brien aged 70
1907 - Bridget O'Brien aged 50
1912 - Bridget O'Brien aged 70
1914 - Bridget O'Brien aged 70
1919 - Bridget O'Brien aged 68
1921 - Bridget O'Brien aged 86
1921 - Bridget Mary O'Brien aged 75
1926 - Bridget O'Brien aged 68
1926 - Bridget O'Brien aged 85
1927 - Bridget O'Brien aged 58
1930 - Bridget Anne O'Brien aged 85
1931 - Bridget O'Brien aged 76
1938 - Bridget O'Brien aged 61
1946 - Bridget O'Brien aged 80
1952 - Bridget Mary O'Brien aged 85
1953 - Bridget O'Brien aged 87
Not known if Bridget was Michael's widow or sister

There is no Bridget Linden or Lindon recorded in the BDM death records (which actually means nothing, many, many are not on their database)

you could check some of these (old) genealogy postings

ngairedith the last article from the Auckland Star seems to suggest stongly that they were brothers. I think that was very good to have found that.

Hugh Talty arrived on the Military ship, 'Castillian' in 1861. The Castillian was chartered by the Bombay Government, with instructions from England, to convey 150 soldiers of the 57th Regiment from Bombay to NZ. They left Bombay on the 27 Jan 1861, arrived in Auckland and were immediately dispatched on the HMS Cordelia to the war in Taranaki

Hugh & Merania (nee Ihaia) had 1 known child, Hori Ihaia Talty in 1873. I believe this could have been the Hugh Talty (1873-1961) that you refer to above as having died 22 Nov 1961 as 89. He is buried ROMAN CATHOLIC DIVISION F, Row 6, Plot 22 at Waikumete cemetery Auckland

Merania remarried in 1926 to George Teoti Chase & had another 13 children

DISPUTE AS TO OWNERSHIP.
A claim for ?15, the value of a Hereford steer, was the subject of a civil action at the Magistrate's Court to-day, the plaintiff being Thomas Fraser, sheep farmer (Mr Bright) and the defendant being Hori Ihaia, of Pouawa (Mr Dunlop). Mr Bright pointed out that the matter had previously come before the court m a different form, when his Worship did not think there was sufficient evidence to warrant a committal for trial: 'The -evidence to be adduced, however, would show that the bullock belonged to plaintiff Evidence was then given by Detective McLeod, plaintiff, George Moore, James Dunbar, Thomas Fraser, jun., and Hurini Taurima to show that the bullock in dispute was owned by the plaintiff. Mr Dunlop applied for a non-suit, and urged that a mistake had been made as to what bullock defendant took. His Worship said he considered there was a case for defendant to answer And disallowed the non-suit. John Cleary and. George Gray then gave evidence. After counsel had addressed the Court, his Worship said he was of opinion plaintiff was entitled to succeed. It was just possible, however, at -the. time he took it, that defendant did not know who owned the bullock. It had been running on the reserve, and when Cleary was bringing down a mob of cattle defendant probably thought it a good opportunity to get the beast to town and turn it into money. Defendant had not been called to contradict plaintiffs evidence. Judgment was given for plaintiff for ?14 with costs ?9 8s 6d.

Is this Hori Ihaia the son of Hugh Talty?

by ngairedith on 2014-09-24 08:02:38

Pouawa is in Gisborne so I think it very possible

Any more Talty material or info I am happy to receive it, especially if it helps identify the Bridget and Bridget Mary and who they married. I would especially like to find any definite links back to Ireland i.e. finding out who Bridget, Kate (Catherine), Michael Hugh and Patrick parents were. They were most likely married in the catholic church and if there were a possibility of knowing where the record might be accessible.

Matthew, I'm only too happy to help. I suggest that you go to www.taltyfamiltyroots.org/records and register. You will find the best info possible. There are not too many Kevin Talty's there so you might find your branch of the family easy to trace. The best way to contact me is by email. Remember to keep your personal info private - not for a website. But I think you can contact me without putting info on the website.

Hi Micheal Hugh Talty born 1847 in Clare Ireland was my great great grandfather he married
Merania Te Hine from Taupo and had a son Hori Ihaia Talty born 1873 and married Mererukuroa
Rapata from Taupo. They had 5 children 4 boys and 1 girl being the yougest that was my grandmother Merania Ihaia Talty. Unfortunately that is all the info I have on Hugh Talty in NZ so any info you may have would be great. I would like to know who his parents were as I do not have their names only their birth dates for his father 1821 Clare Ireland and mother 1825 Clare Ireland.

Hi Ngaireedith and Michaeltalty
I am very grateful for the information that you both have provided on this website about my gr gr grandfather Hugh Talty. Like my first cousin Bubbles12 I too do no have anymore information other what she has stated in her comments.
Our whanau do not have any record of a marriage between Hugh Talty and Merania Te Hina so I appreciate that you say they were married; this now urges me to search for a marriage certificate.
Also, one clarification: Merania Te Hina wife of Hugh Talty is the grandmother of the Merania Ihaia Talty (daughter of Hori Ihaia) who married George Te Oti Te Puke Chase. I am one of their many grandchildren; my mother being their second child (eldest daughter) of 14 children.

Hi bobby1960, I personally don't have a marriage certificate for Hugh but I suggest Ngaireedith has evidence and to check her material using familysearch website. I would suggest that you register as a membert of www.taltyfamilyroots.org/records where you will find a collection of information on Hugh that might be useful. He is I2256 in the database. Feel free to suggest to the administrator if you think more information can be added or needs updating. This way a better picture of the man can be developed. He seems from what I gather rather adventurous person. If you come across more information on the Taltys in New Zealand please forward this also to the administrator of the TFR site as every little piece helps. Regards

Hi MichaelTalty

Thanks so much for your speedy reply with all the helpful information. Since coming onto this website I registered onto the www.taltyfamilyroots.org website and have only just been confirmed this morning. I am so happy to be a member of it.
Thanks to this website I found a newspaper clipping about the inquest into Hugh's death. I also see on here that there is another Hugh Talty (1873-1961) buried in the Waikumete Cemetery, suggesting that he could be Hori Ihaia Talty. I know for a fact that they are not the same person. Hori Ihaia Talty died June 1960, and is buried in Taupo. I am very interested in finding out who the Hugh Talty was who owned land at Opotiki. I will ask my mum's siter who was raised by Hori and his second wife; they lived at Manaia on the Coromandel Peninsula. Yes I will most definitely add any info I have regarding Hugh Talty to the Talty Family website. Regards

Hi there,
Just doing some research on my family tree and came across this post.
Bridget Mary Talty and Joseph John Sinden are my gr gr grandparents (I see that you have found it listed somewhere as Linden and hit a dead end). They married in 1879 and had their first child together that year also. Bridget's death certificate is dated 1912 aged 60 which would make her DOB around 1852. I've not been able to yet locate any information in NZ regarding the generations prior to Bridget and Joseph so I think they must have come from overseas. I'm unsure if Bridget was married prior to marrying Joseph.
Thanks!

by michaeltalty on 2017-01-26 07:33:41

Happy Cat I am very interested in hearing from you. as I have not been able to separate The Bridget and Bridget Mary and who they married. One married a Sinden the other married O'Brien.
I have the feeling that Bridget Mary was married before to Michael Talty who died in 21 May 1877 Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.
Are you able to find out which of these was a widow who was previously Bridget Barry. Also I believe that the other Bridget Barry was most likely a sister of Michael Talty who died in 1877 and who came out on the ship the Inverness.
