N O T E

... thanks to tobydog for the following:
- anything in italics is my addition -

* It would appear that my grandfather was illigitimate and may have been placed in an orphanage until he became of age and then sent to the Burnham Industrial Camp
So far I have not been able to obtain records to the camp but I believe they may be held in Wellington

* Herbert was born to Sophia Payne on 26th Feb 1901 - she was 21 years of age and her address was Salisbury Street, (central) Christchurch (no number)

* Sophia Annie Payne died September 17th September 1903 of Phthisis Pulmonalis Collapse (Tuberculosis) buried 20th Seprtember 1903 at Linwood - Minister R. T. Matthews.
At time of Death she lived at 183 Salisbury Road and her occupation was described as Domestic Duties
Her parents lived at 179 Salisbury Road
According to my father Salisbury Street was renowned for big old houses turned into flats/appartments

* All the Payne children were baptised into the Anglican Church and I have searched these records for details in the Christchurch Library - either at St Lukes or St Matthews in St Albans (ironically where my family all went to Sunday School when we lived in Chistchurch) - the sponsers were nearly always the parents or Papprills

* Sophia's Dad died in 1898 and Marianne had about 5 children under the age of 21 when my grandfather was born

* Herbert Payne married Evelyn Elsie Wood of Kaiapoi 22 April 1925 in Rangiora and they had 3 children

* Herbert was on the Railways at this time where he worked all his life. He worked in the Horriville (North Canterbury), Southbridge, Kaiapoi, Hamden and then around the Christchurch areas.

* What I dont know is what happened to Herbert Payne after he was born - was he whisked straight into an orphanage and then sent to Burnham Industrial School? certainly was something he would never discuss with his children or myself when I asked before he passed away in 1982.

* I do know that he was taken from the school and fostered by local Beekeeper/Handyman Charles Nicol and his wife Helen (this was Charles Lee NICHOLL (1866-1936) and Helena Augusta ORCHARD, born 26 Feb 1867 in Burnham, 1 of 11 children of Charles ORCHARD & Jane BOSS - she died 17 Feb 1954 at the Jubilee Home in Christchurch)
- Charles taught at the school

* I believe they only had a daughter who was born in 1908 (this was Dorothy Helena Louisa Nicholl)) and so they took in my Grandfather to help round the farm

* I have spoken to their granddaughter and although she can remember her mother speaking about my Grandfather she is unable to recall anything significant

* My Dad is now 84 and can remember the Nicholls well and he was led to believe they were his grandparents
- they did not adopt Herbert

* I am now trying to ascertain what Anglican Orphanges were in the Christchurch area and if I can access their records

If you recognise these names or know of any info on these people mentioned above or if you can help with orphanages or where to obtain old records of the Burnham Industrial Camp PLEASE leave a comment below
