William John HOOPER was born in Chipping Ongar Essex, England on 8th January 1853
- he was a son of John Thomas HOOPER & Rebecca PAGE who emigrated form Bethnal Green on the 30th November 1856 aboard the ANN WILSON with 2 children, daughter Sophia and William, arriving in Port Nicholson (now called Wellington) on 30th March 1857

William married Charlotte COMPTON on 10th June 1879 at the home of Mrs Maria Compton, Masterton
- they had 14 children

- their 11th child, Herbert George married Muriel Chandler, daughter of Samuel and Clara (nee Ransom) Chandler. .
