GEORGE HUNT died 17 Aug 1936 aged 80
Mr GEORGE HUNT. The death occurred on Sunday last of Mr George Hunt, a pioneer settler of the Catlins district. Mr Hunt commenced his farming career on a property near Waikouaiti, but later acquired a farm in South Otago, the railway station, Hunt's road, on the Catlins line, being named after him. Mr Hunt had a family of 16 children
Otago Daily Times, 22 Aug 1936
OBITUARY Mr George Hunt, whose funeral took place at Waikouaiti on Wednesday, was born at Leamington, England and on the seventeenth day of last month he celebrated his eightieth birthday. At the age of nine he was set to work in a brickyard, but when 16 years of age he joined a party of emigrants for New Zealand.
Arriving at Dunedin, he obtained employment in the city and later the formation of the Waikouaiti section of the railway line brought him to this district.
It was largely on account of his wife, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Grieve, early settlers of the Merton district, that he developed an interest in the work of the Early Settlers' Association, but he too, can be rightly be considered as one of the early pioneers. His plough turned the first furrow of Waikouaiti's virgin land and it was he who supplied, from the Omimi bush, thousands of the posts required for the fencing of the land then being taken up.
In his younger days, Mr Hunt's name frequently appeared on the programmes of entertainments given in the district and he could sing a good song.
The large attendance at his funeral was evidence of the respect in which he was held.
