The Garnes Famiy: An Ammendment to Parts I and I I With Corrections.
With some embarrassment, I stand corrected regarding some critical information I included in the earlier Journals. I stated that much of what I had written was from word of mouth accounts, and this is where the problems arose.
First, Joseph and Sarah left Ireland for Giles County Virginia a little prior to the start of the Revolutionary War, in which Joseph served. I originally said that they settled in Jackson County right away.In actuality they made their home in Giles. In addition, it was my belief that Joseph II was Joseph and Sarah's only child, when in fact they had another son. His name was Benjamin Tapley Garnes, and he married one Elizabeth Scanland January 27, 1813 at Botecourt County Virginia. That is where they settled.
It seems that Joseph died in Virginia well before Lady Sarah. Joseph II served in the War of 1812, and received 2 100 acre land grants at Stone Lick and Grass Lick in Mason ( now Jackson ) county. It was he that established the Garnes family in Jackson County West Virginia, not his father Joseph I. Joseph II married Peggy (Margaret) Minnick January 4,1810 at Montgomerey County, Va. It appears that Lady Sarah accompanied Joseph II to Mason County, and Joseph I was buried in Giles County Virginia. His date of death is uncertain. I believe Lady Sarah is buried in Jackson County West Virginia.
