oateskmtg on 2012-02-22 23:59:34My great great grandfather was HENRY OATES, born st breage cornwall june 30th 1833. Died mt gambier south australia 25th feb. 1910. He at 33years of age decided to try his luck in australia together with Wife Mary 39 years and two sons, john arthur 9yrs and james henry 6yrs. Arrived port adelaide on the ship "Canterbury" (1,296 tons) on 31-12-1866 after leaving plymouth england on 2-10-1866. Transfered to ship "Balclutha" and landed at Port MacDonnell SA. Then settled in Mount Gambier and more family were born there. Chant family are related to us Oates. Would like to have contact with Chants Family. I have much more information. I am in Melbourne.
