Josiah began working in the copper mines of St. Blazey at age 8. In July 1854 he sailed from Liverpool aboard "Star of the West" arriving in New York seven weeks later. He worked the mines of council Hill [Jo Davies Co] in the winter and worked on a farm during the summer. In 1864 he bought a farm of 104 acres at Scales Mound, then, in 1872, sold it and bought another. In addition to General farming, he bred cattle and horses.
