Marlborough Express, 25 March 1873 FATAL ACCIDENT
An inquest was held on Tuesday, the 25th instant, at Gouland's Ferry, before H. Williams, Esq., M.D., District Coroner, touching the death of William Sedcole, who met with an untimely end the previous evening by falling from a boat into the Wairau river. The deceased left Gouland's Ferry in a boat Monday evening in company with Mr Hathaway and two other persons. On arriving near the Maori pah (sic, pa) it appears that one of the men left the boat to carry a message to some of the Natives. After waiting some time deceased proposed landing for the purpose of hastening the other man. It was then dark and in leaping ashore he slipped into deep water unknown to those in the boat, a few minutes after which he called out "Oh!" and they immediately endeavored to give him assistance, but the poor fellow had disappeared and notwithstanding that every means were taken which circumstances would permit for his recovery, the body was not found till the following morning, when it was discovered in about twelve feet of water. Deceased was perfectly sober when the accident occurred and had he been able to swim might have reached the shore without any difficulty. The jury returned a verdict of Accidentally Drowned
