They ARE on my computer - but where?

Journal by frogprincess

I read the article about genealogy clutter. Yes I do have lots of paper everywhere. I also have clutter on my computer.
I scan (or save) all my certificates, newspaper articles, photos, census records, electoral rolls. Basically, I have everything saved to my computer. My problem was where did I put it? At first, I just saved it to the computer. I did not know how to change the directory or create new folders. It just saved to the place my scanner wanted to put it. I think I have solved that problem.

I have created folders for each subject e.g. marriage certificates, birth certificates, electoral rolls, military records etc.
As each generation seem to have the same names,I add dates to my file names. For example, in the birth certificate file, Jane Gibson's scan has her name and her birth date (Jane Gibson 22 Feb 1860.JPG).
By doing this, I can easily locate which record I am looking for when sending attachments to emails or uploading to a family tree.

I also have these files on an external hard drive. You never know when your computer will crash.

I am happy to search nearby cemeteries: Woodford; Kilcoy; Albany Creek Cemetery; Caboolture & Districts Lawn Cemetery; Caboolture Cemetery; Dayboro Cemetery; Lawnton Cemetery; Redcliffe Cemetery; Samford Cemetery; Samsonvale Cemetery; Mt Mee Cemetery; Upper Caboolture Cemetery.
