Thomas was born in Edinburgh. He is with his mother, and siblings in 1841 Census for Edinburgh. In 1851 he and siblings are with his Aunt and Uncle. In 1862 he is in NZ marrying Caroline in Dunedin. She is from Kent and her father lives in Auckland.
