ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S CLEVEREST FEATHERS
The Career Of Tommy Jones
Oxley's Hill, Boural.
21/7/35.
DEAR SIR,? Would you please write something in your valuable and
interesting paper about one, Tommy Jones, reputed to be one time bantam featherweight and lightweight champion of Australia. As near as I can find out he fought in the time of the old Gaiety and Golden Gate.?
Yours in sport, 'ROLLY' PEARCE.
TOM JONES was certainly a shining light of the old Gaiety Athletic Club regime, and ranks as one of the cleverest featherweights of Australian boxing history. Born at Redfern (N.S.W.) in or about the year 1884 (his real name is James Fletcher). Tommy Jones made his first ring appearance in 1904, when he won a 9 stone tourney at the Gaiety. In that year he lost to the late 'Yank' Pearl, fought a draw with Ted Green, and defeated Charlie Raff and Peter Toohey.
He was not born at Redfern but at Tenterfield, NSW on the 10 March 1884 to James and Mary Fletcher.
Drake, Glen Innes, Wellingrove and Tenterfield are towns close to each other therefore I think the following from bdm.nsw Births are possible syblings,
26549/1880 26549/1880 FLETCHER MAUD JAMES MARY WELLINGROVE
16075/1882 FLETCHER JOSEPH CLAUD JAMES MARY GLEN INNES
32375/1884 32375/1884 FLETCHER JAMES JAMES MARY TENTERFIELD
36247/1888 FLETCHER JESSIE JAMES MARY DRAKE
11836/1890 FLETCHER LAWRENCE JAMES MARY DRAKE
180512/2005 FLETCHER EDWARD M JAMES MARY
Sometimes finding a sybling will bring about a lead.
I did see a reference to a Tommy Jones fighting at Ipswich in 1914 (badly damaged his hand in the 13th round) may not have been the same Tommy Jones, but if it was he may have finished up in Queensland; could have done that anyway, Tenterfield is close to the border.
According to his birth certificate, the Tommy Jones (James Fletcher) I refer to was born on the 3rd July 1884 on "Bolivia Station" at Tenterfield. He was my mothers grandfather but she never knew him and he wasn't spoken about within the family. My mother says that her father (James son William, known as Bill) sometimes would take her to carnivals and her father would hang around the boxing tents looking for his father, so he must have had some knowledge of his fathers occupation. We know that around 1920 he had something to do with Jimmy Sharmans boxing troupe in the Riverina area NSW. After that he seems to have vanished.
Yes you're right about the date of birth; I saw 1884/7/3 HERE and now realise it was written the american way with the month before the day. where I got the 10th from I don't know.
I did see a reference to a Tommy Jones fighting in Ipswich in May 1914 at the Tivoli Stadium against a Paddy McFarlane and damaging his hand in the 13th round. I didn't mention it, I wasn't sure if it was the same Tommy Jones. He went into the fight weighing 10s 6lb.
