James Hamilton was my great grandfather. His marriage certificate of 1866 shows he was born in 1840 in Devonshire, England. His father's name was John Hamilton, a labourer and his mother was Elizabeth. I cannot decipher her maiden name on the certificate which could be Cause, Cance or similar. I have no idea how or when he came to Australia, but he did marry an Agnes Muirhead at Benayeo in Victoria, Australia in 1866. James died in 1894 at age 54 and is buried in the Mt Gambier Lake Terrace cemetery.
Does anyone know anything about James which can help me resolve his origins?
