Query by gayecolquhoun

born 1876 in Waimate North to Hazar Dixon died 1918 in Auckland of influenza had 1 son Cyril born 1916. Charles had 5 children to my Grandmother (Adalaide Bowyer) before Cyril was born and we have been told that he may have been married before and had other children.

gaye, Cyril Sydney Dixon (1916-1993) was born 8 Sep 1916 to Charles Alfred Dixon & Alice Beatrice Choat who married in 1900.

They actually had at least 8 children and as one was named Donald Hazar Dixon (1914-1984) this is probably the same family

gaye, you wrote .. Charles Alfred Dixon, born 1876 in Waimate North to Hazar Dixon died 1918 in Auckland of influenza had 1 son Cyril born 1916. Charles had 5 children to my Grandmother (Adalaide Bowyer) before Cyril was born and we have been told that he may have been married before and had other children

Wondering if you have your grandmothers mixed up :) because Adelaide Leslie Bowyer (1892-1950) married Joseph Colquhoun in 1921

ok gaye, my apologies
a little more research and I have this ..

* 1876 - 1918 Charles Alfred Dixon, son of Hazar Dixon (1846-1916) & Maud Eveline Clark (1858-1932) of Paihia, Bay of Islands
* married Alice Beatrice Choat (1881-1958) 5 Sep 1900 at her father's residence, Puketona, Kawakawa
their known children
1902 - 1902 unnamed baby Dixon
1904 - 1949 Eric Clark Dixon
1906 - 1986 Dudley James Dixon
1908 - 1983 Edgar Lloyd Dixon
1910 - 1990 Myrtle Beatrice Dixon
1912 - 1989 Joyce Dixon
1914 - 1984 Donald Hazar Dixon
1916 - 1993 Cyril Sydney Dixon
1918 - 2009 Mabel Laura Dixon

DEATH OF CHARLES
Auckland Weekly News, 19 Nov 1918

DIXON, Charles Alfred, died on 16 November 1918 at Otahuhu Hospital, of influenza. Charles Alfred Dixon of East Tamaki, eldest son of the late Mr Hazar Dixon of Kamo, late of Waimate North, Bay of Islands; aged 42, son and brother of Laura and Milly.

NOTE
It has been said that Charles Alfred Dixon was the father of 5 children with Adelaide Leslie Bowyer (1895-1950), daughter of Thomas Hansen Bowyer (1853-1915) & Emma Louisa Irving (1859-1937), both also of Paihia, Bay of Islands.
However, she did not marry any Dixon.
BDM has children born to Adelaide Leslie Bowyer, 4 with unknown father ..
1913 - 1965 Violet Alma Dixon Bowyer (father was registered as a Charles Alfred but surname registered as Bowyer)
1914 - Leonard Leo Bowyer
1915 - Ida Bowyer
1916 - 1985 Lyall Charles Bowyer
1919 - 2011 Pauline Leslie Bowyer

These children are possible of course and needs further research. Or it may be another Charles Alfred Dixon.
* 'Our' Charles died in Nov 1918
* Adelaide's daughter Pauline was born in Jan 1919
* and Adelaide Leslie Bowyer married in 1921 to Joseph Colquhoun

Also of note ..
Charles's death notice does not say "loving husband of" (Alice), just son and brother of .. (suggesting Alice may have known of his 'other family') but although she lived another 40 years after his death she does not appear to have remarried

conjecture only

Hi gayecolquhoun,
Finally, this then is the (rather tangled web of) spouses and children that you seek

Charles Alfred Dixon + Alice Beatrice Choat + Adelaide Leslie Bowyer

Hi Ngaireedith, thank you so much for finding all this out. Family papers confirm he is indeed the the same Charles Dixon he fathered Adelaides children.

WOW, this was such an interesting 'life story' to research Gaye 😀
So many tangled stories all intertwined. Amazing.
I will update or edit it as other info comes to light

Hi Gaye, I hope this reaches you. I sent all Paula's (Pauline's) papers and photos to Nelson. I kept copies of everything I think including Adelaide's will. I can send them to you if you give me your email address somehow on here or find me on FaceBook. I saw somewhere that Adelaide's grave was at Waikumete. It's actually at Waimate North. Paula's ashes are also there with her Mum's (Adelaide) and sister Ida. I can send you a photo of the gravestone to post on your listing. I have lots of photos of the family. I saw above someone wrote about Paula being born after her father died. Yes, he did sadly for Paula and for all those 5 children he had with Adelaide. The family were living in Waiuku at that time, I was told. Leo had lots of stories about his dad Charlie.
