Wales Look-ups

Journal by WelshGen

This is more about my wife's ancestors than my own. My wife was a Jones (oh no!, not one of those I hear you say). She is now a Hughes, can it get any worse for looking up Welsh ancestors. Erm actually it can because she is descended from a very long line of Williams.
In order to do the research for my wife I've acquired the complete census returns for Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd) in North Wales for the years 1891, 1881, 1861, 1851, and 1841 as well as a lot of other bits and pieces too numerous to mention in this post. If anyone wants a look-up then just ask
My wife's ancestors are all from the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales (it's the bit that sticks out and looks as if it is pointing to Ireland) Two of the better websites for this area are RHIW
and
ROOTSWEB

That's wonderful that you are willing to help others.

Question?

My Ambrose Williams was born in Wales and came to America about 1745. Where do I start in Wales as I am unable to find a ships record or his POE.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Clydene

Hi Clydene the majority of North Wales emmigrants left the UK on ships out from Liverpool. T he link below is probably by far the most comprehensive list of ships that left the UK many include the passenger lists.

I think its great your helping others find their roots. I have recently become interested in finding out my family's history. My Surname is Hughes and all I know is that my great granfather came over to Canada from Wales when he was just a boy (he was a original homeboy) and he beleived he had a sister but was unsure. I have no clue where to even start.

Hi Dragonwolfe, haven't been in here for a while due to comp crash and being very busy. If you have your grandfather's first name/s, and/or d.o.b., place of birth or last known place of residence in Wales (with approximate date), occupation then any of these details may help a researcher to do a search for you or point you in the right direction.

Hello from Canada: I am doing a search for my elderly mother. Can anyone help me track any of my Grandmother's roots? Her name was Grace, Humphries JONES.Born in 1885 in Carnarvon Wales. Her father was John JONES (u/k mothers name)and she had an uncle, Griffith JONES. In 1891, Grace came to Canada with 5 of her 6 siblings and Richard was left behind at the age of 2 years (1891). Grace's cousin was Dilys Jones(daughter of Griffith Jones). Dilys had a daughter Margaret JONES. Any help would be great ! Bob

2-00 a.m. here, just flicking through my emails and come across this, the below may not help but I'm posting anyway.
Ancestry.com is showing a Grace Humphreys Jones, b.abt 1854, died Apr, May, June 1910 in Bangor, Caerns. Did Grace stay in Canada?
Also: 1881 census .. Grace H. Jones, 25, shop assistant, b. Llandegai, Bangor, Caernarvonshire, boarder at 4 South Penrallt, Caernarvon
Also 3 different Grace Jones, b. 1855 in Bangor
Can't find a Caernarvon born Grace but this was a quick look

Hello, I am sorry for the delay getting back to you. My Grandmother Grace Humphries JONES (10 Feb 1885)as mentioned came to Canada in 1891 at the age of six years. She stayed in Canada and married a William George McGuire. She died at the age of 106 years in Kingston Ontario. I believe her uncle was a minister at a church in Wales, believed to be, Carnarvon Wales. I have never been there, but it is my understanding that there is a statue of Griffith Jones next to the church. I have seen a post card of the church and statue. I am new to this geneolegy stuff and just seem to be overwhelmed when dealing with the name "JONES" in Wales! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading...... Bob
