Walter family from Maidstone, Kent, England

Query by berryfields

Hi and hoping someone may be able to help me find any information about the Walter family. My husband's great grandmother was Hannah Walter who was born about 1864 in Maidstone, Kent, England and around 1872 Hannah then aged about 7-8 years of age came out to NZ. As yet I do not know what port she arrived in let alone what ship she sailed out on. On her death certificate it states her parents were John Walter and mother Elizabeth Walter (also her maiden name was Walter)and that Hannah had lived in NZ for 76 years at time of her death, Hannah was 85 when she died. Hannah (known as Annie in NZ)married Erick Victor Lundqvist (born in Sweden) in Wellington when she was age 21. They had five children, sons Leonard Victor; Walter Stanley, Louis Edward and Albert Thomas and one daughter Eveline Helen and all children were born in Wellington. Hannah died in the Wellington hospital in 1948 and her residence for many years was 55 Hanson Street, Wellington. I have been unable to trace any death information on her parents John and Elizabeth in the NZBDM or any NZ city libraries indexes and NZ Archives. I received a message from a gentleman via ancestry who researches the Walter family from Kent and he mentioned that he thinks "my" Hannah was the daughter of Mary Elisabeth Walter and that Mary E was only about 18 and single when she had Hannah and that Hannah lived with her grandparents John and Elizabeth Walter and Hannah may have come out to NZ with two of her mother's sisters Emma (married name Sears) and Ruth Walter but unfortunately with that information have not been able to find any passenger lists for Hannah and her two aunties and her uncle in law Henry Sears. I have found a couple of census for a John and Elizabeth Walter and a 1871 census for a Hannah Walter living with her mother Mary and grandmother Elizabeth in Maidstone but am not sure if they "belong" on my husbands tree. Thanking you and Cheers, Judy

Thanks again for your help.
I will now wait and see what Hannah's marriage certificate reveals.
It may give more insight as to her parents names.
Otherwise will need to look at both birth certs that you have mentioned.
Thanks again and cheers.

Thank you very much 'janilye' and yes I do have Erick's naturalisation record saved on my husband's tree but thank you also for suggesting about contributing for his son Walter Stanley on the Centopath site. I got a lot of information on Walter Stanley from NZ Archives and other sites and Walter died at Trentham Military Hospital in 1921 from poison gas problems brought about when serving in France etc during WW1. Walter is buried at Soldier's Cemetery, Karori. I will definitely add my knowledge on Walter and other family members on my side and my husbands who served (and some died) during WW1 on Centopath. I often go onto that site and it never crossed my mind about contributing. Thank you for that. Papers Past have quite a bit of Walter Stanley Lundquist's funeral. Thanking you again and cheers, Judy

Hannah's wedding certificate states she was born in Maidstone, Kent and her parents were John and Elizabeth (nee Walter) Walter and father's occupation Iron Founder - same information as on Hannah's death certificate. The wedding took place on 17 January 1885 in Wellington and Hannah was age 21.
