Warton / Wharton
I recently decided to try to put together a Family Tree as I know my father came from a long line of Romany gypsies I have to admit it was going to be a little difficult as my father died in 1986 although dad had 7 brothers and 5 sisters the last member of his family died in 2010(although 2 of dads sisters Margery & Sally I know both moved to Bradford & Birmingham in the 1940's they used to visit every year when I was young but when dad died we lost track of them both)so I thought I was in for a difficult task' however with the help of the internet I was able to discover my 3rd great grandparents were John Warton (born 1770 Sussex)& Fanny Stanley (born 1773 Bristol)and they had 7 children who were Harriet, Gilderoy(my 2nd great grandfather) Meachic, John, Mary Ann ,Louisa, and Matilda. In 1856 Harriet (born 1794) married Levi Owen Stanley(born 1793))and John (born 1801)who had married Carnation Lee(born 1800)both families emigrated to America in 1850.One child of Harriet and Owen children was Levi Stanley who later married Matilda Joles I believe they became known as Gypsie King & Queen, Matilda also became quite famous as a Fortune Teller & Mesmerist 'when she died in Vicksburg Mississippi in 1878 her body was embalmed for 8 months to allow relatives from across America, England and Canada to attend the funeral, in all 20,000 people were present at her internment in Woodland cemetery Dayton' according to what I have learned from the internet her funeral was covered by all the major newspapers (I will be lucky if 20 attend mine)another member of the family who was known in America at the time was Uriah Warton He also had a article written and printed in The New York Times in 1881 the story was titled "Romantic Gypsy Marriage" (Sequel To The Death Of A Gypsy King)my problem relates to a later marriage of one of my 2nd great grandfather Gilderoy one of his son's called Stephen (born 1878 Ryhope Durham England) and he was my great grandfather but I am unable to discover the surname of his wife (my great grandmother) Margerum's anywhere it seems easier to find information on others born at a earlier time than it is to find the surname of my great grandmother which is odd. I would love to hear from anyone who has any information or family connections
