Watkin ancestors from Montgomeryshire (now Powys, Wales) and Shropshire (England)
Hi. I am commencing a research task prior to visiting these areas of the UK, on a trip from New Zealand, later this year (2015).
Using the power of the internet, I have narrowed the search areas to a small part of the English/Welsh border, around Llangynyw, Manafon, Bettws Cedewain, Berriew, Clun and Church Stretton. My forebears were farmers in this area, and the earliest confirmed ancestor I have found is Job Watkin (my great great grandfather) and his wife Ann (nee Goodwin) who were married on 2 May 1829 at Bettws Cedewain.
I have found evidence that they had ten children, between 1831 and about 1855. At least three of them (John, born 1831, Arthur, born 1841 and Daniel, born 1849) emigrated to New Zealand in 1880 and 1881. Arthur is my great grandfather.
I would like to find out what happened to Job and Ann. Did they also move away, or end their days pretty much where they started?
I would like to try and find out what happened to the other seven, (Job, Edward, Catherine, Evan, Ann, Thomas & Alfred) and whether any of their descendants are still living in the area.
Any help will be appreciated!
Roger

Wow, wizard28, you are indeed a wizard! I have been using findmyroots.co.uk for most of my research, and found quite a lot of info from there - although their search 'engines' are, I believe, somewhat broadstroke!
One of my problems has been the surname itself. Many earlier records are recorded as "Watkins" but the later ones "Watkin".
But all of the above (and I thank you most sincerely for the effort you have put in) is information I have not previously known. The date of birth census data varies from one to the next, so Job (who I believe was baptised on 20 Nov 1801) has various birthdates from then until 1806. Ann was 4 or 5 years younger, so her birthdate is anywhere from 1806 to 1811. The 1841 census, of which I have a copy, have them aged 35 and 30, living at "Moat" which I take to be the name of a farm in the township of Manafon.
You may be interested to know that Job's grandson, Job Ernest Watkin (born at Woolston near Wistanstow in 1874, eldest son of Arthur Rogers Watkin) was a dairy farmer at Te Aroha West in the Thames Valley district of Waikato Province in New Zealand. Job Ernest was my grandfather, and passed away 177 days before I was born!
I will follow the links you have provided.
Thanks again!
Roger (Wellington, NZ)
Glad to have been able to help. If think the address in the 1841 census reads:
Moat Street, Manafon, Newtown & Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire, England
In the 1841 (which was the first major census for all of the uk ) they for some reason rounded the ages up or down to the nearest 5.
I have sent you a private message
Thanks for the p.m.
Ah, so that's why there is a discrepancy in ages ... I see on the census page I have a copy of all the adults have an age ending in 0 or 5! The notes on the bottom of the form says ages were rounded down from 15-19 to 15, and upwards.
I still think 'Moat' refers to a farm and not a street! The census form refers to a "place" rather than a street, and the page that Arthur Rogers is on includes other "places".
