What happened to Catherine Barnes Hoffman Hill's first husband?
That would be the Hoffman. C was born Catherine Ellen Barnes 1845, Lockport, NY. Her parents were John Haddock Barnes (1825 Milton, NY) and Margaret Cotter (1825 Canada) She had 2 children - Edith Totten Hoffman (born Ft Totten, Dakota Territory, 1867) and my grandfather, Harry Hoffman (born in PA, 1869). She went from NY to Ohio to Dakota Territory to PA to Iowa to Montana [marries Charles R Hill in 1877 in Lewis & Clark co.] and then to MN where she dies in 1905). After 1870 Edward Hoffman disappears. It's Edward Hoffman on Edith T's Minneapolis death record and John Hoffman on my grandfather's Minneapolis death record. Grandpa had NO clue as to where his mother was from, but Edith did. So I think Edith's info is more accurate. Both were consistent in that their dad was from Germany.
So who was her 1st husband- Edward or John and what happened to him? There is a Pvt Edward Hoffman who was part of a garrison listing in the 1870 US Federal census at Ft Sully, Dakota Territory from Germany who enlisted in Phila. PA. and there is a Lt WE Hoffman at Ft Totten (officers could have family on base).
ANY help/insights would be appreciated. My head hurts from banging against this wall.
Thanks, Loren Hoffman

Started out simply enough, but more answers led to more questions. Family surnames: Hoffman (from PA), Barnes (from CT to NY to the Midwest and beyond) and Myers from Glanworth, Ireland to Minneapolis, MN
