Trying to find passenger lists from NSW to Lyttelton in 1850's
Trying to find passenger listings for John McHarg aka John Irvin McHarg born Portpatrick, Scotland about 1832 and died in Christchurch 5 September 1908. He would have left somewhere in the UK around mid 1850's and sailed to NSW and then eventually to Lyttelton. He married in Christchurch in 1860 to Jane Dyke so would have arrived in Lyttelton between 1856-1858 thereabouts. The Victoria government site is excellent for finding passenger listings for immigrants/passengers from Victoria only to NZ but am having problems trying to search for passenger listings from NSW to NZ and am hoping someone may know where to search. John McHarg's sister Helen and her husband Thomas Wilson were already settled in Christchurch having sailed out in 1855 from London on the "Caroline Agnes". Thomas Wilson had his own business "Caledonian Bakery" in Colombo St and eventually John McHarg went into business with him as tree-fellers and also a tannery business. John McHarg's occupation was a skinner.
Thanking in advance for any help.
Cheers, Judy

Hello
Go into your search engine and type "New Zealand BDM" and it will explain what to do once your in the site.
Try my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/family-history/. There is a good how-too guide on Family History with links to many helpful websites.
Thanks to you both for your replies. I just had a re-read of my message and I did not explain it correctly! I should have asked what were the best NSW sites to find passenger lists for ships that sailed out to NZ from NSW. The Victoria govt one is great but it only deals with passenger leaving from the state of Victoria. Maybe I should put a new message up and delete this one. Thanks to you both anyway.
Cheers, Judy
hi Judy,
no need to delete this posting just go to 'Owner Edit' and change the heading to a short description
THEN write in the body of the page more on what you are looking for.
For example your heading could read ...
looking for passenger lists for ships NSW to NZ 1850s
Then in the page maybe tell us some of the people you are looking for. You would be surprised who else may be looking for the same people or who have already found all the info you are looking for and help you on your way
Thanks Ngairedith and will do now.
Cheers
