William Burton Beard/Strausbaugh

I've looked extensively and I can't find much accurate information. I was told his listed father, Thomas Lemon Beard, is actually his stepfather and his original name was Strausbaugh. I have found a census with listed him as Strausbaugh when he was 2 years old. But no one can tell me how his name became Beard or where i should go from there.

In the 1920 census he is shown as Burton Beard age 13 so you must assume he took the name Beard when his mother married. According to the 1910 census Thomas was not married or a widower so he could have been William Burton Strausbaugh's birth father.
You need his birth cert to see who his parents are listed as. I could not find a birth reg.
