Hephzibah was a daughter of Samuel MEDLEY & Hephzibah PERRY who married in Lambeth, London in 1852.
Her father was a chemist but died on the Queen of the Avon during their immigration to New Zealand. The barque sailed from London 16 April 1863 & arrived in Wellington 9 August 1863. Her mother arrived a widow with 4 children:

* Ernest Samuel Medley (1858-1914) - aged 5
* Florence Mary Medley (1859-1929) - aged 4
* Laura Caroline Medley (1862-1933) - aged 1

in Jan 1890 Maurice was at Terrace School. The School Committee stated that the body had decided to vote ?18 18s (equivalent in 2012 to $3,300) to assist the three highest unsuccessful scholarship candidates, Maurcie Gandy, Alice Cornish and Charles Benson to continue their education for one year. It was moved that the Board should contibute an equal amount and that they should ask the Government to contribute ? for ? toward the education of the children mentioned

18 Dec 1900 Howard was sentenced in the Wellington Court to 3 months hard labour for stealing ?7 (2012 equivalent of $1240). He was on Probation for a former offence. Friends offered to pay the money but Howard's father insisted the matter should go to court
1901 Howard, wanted by the Police for forgery, migrated to South Africa where he got into trouble and was finally deported back to NZ in 1917, (16 years later). He was apprehended and received 3 months imprisonment for the old charge
20 Feb 1919 Howard was sentenced in the Palmerston North Court to 12 months hard labour for forgery and uttering at Feilding

William John Gandy died 20 May 1920 aged 87

Mr William John Gandy, whose death occurred yesterday at his residence, Colombo-street, at the age of eighty-six, was one of Wellington's early businessmen, and had been one of the city's well-known residents. The deceased, a native of London, came to New Zealand in 1854 in the ship Balnaguith and for ten years followed a country occupation, acquiring knowledge and information for his business of dairy produce and general commission agent which he establised in Wellington in 1864 and which he had carried on ever since. The deceased was an esteemed citizen and had a large circle of friends
