WILFRID RUSSELL GRIMWADE AND JOHN GILBERT MANN, FRANKSTON, VIC., AUST.

Journal by itellya

I suppose there would be an Australian Dictionary of Biography article about Sir Russell Grimwade. I'd never even thought who had been responsible for bringing Cook's Cottage to Melbourne and this would probably be mentioned in such a biography, as well as his business interests, but there's no way known that all of the information contained in this treasure trove could be included! I discovered it in an effort to find out whether Harbury, John Gilbert Mann's residence at Mount Eliza, where John died in 1952, had been demolished or was still standing.

Sir Russell and John Gilbert Mann (who wrote the history of Mt Eliza in 1926) obviously knew each other well and shared a deep interest in Australia's history and flora. It was a Grimwade search on trove that enabled me to find the origin of the names of Harleston Rd,and Thornton Rd, Mt. Eliza (Melway 101 H9.) The collection includes architectural plans of houses that would be of great interest to heritage consultants, details of the first legal decision given in Melbourne, correspondence, a HUGE collection of photos (Coolart, Balnarring racecourse, the grandstand at the 1899 races at Portsea, Frankston golf links, etc.), maps that probably could not be accessed online, reward posters, and other information that would never have been published in newspapers.

I'm only halfway through the collection and I have a commitment in an hour so I will have to make do with providing the summary which led me to the collection. The photo may be a group photo, or Sir Russell, at Harbury, either inside or outside.

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.
